Let's reach a concensus...CAN AN ADULT BLUE SURVIVE ON AN ALL RODENT DIET?

blue_tegu Sep 30, 2004 11:44 PM

I have been told in the past by some breeders well known on this forum that an adult blue can survive and thrive on a diet consisting solely of rodents. I trust them and have been feeding Amika an all rodent diet for the past few months since she refuses to eat fruit anymore. I've been dusting the mice with repti-vite, but while discussing this issue on another forum, I was told that an all rodent diet is absolutely horrible. What's the truth? I'm sure a varied diet is certainly the best option, but what if she refuses to eat fruits? I did manage to get her to eat some banana out of my hand this week, so maybe things will change, but still, I much prefer feeding whole prey than going with the controversial SDZ diet and having to add my own vitamins and fruits to the mixture.

Ron And Stella St. Pierre told me thius is fine. They have had Blues the longest. If your worried and want to give your tegu more of a varity, Try giving it dusted kingmealworms ,and Friut dipped in blended hard boiled egg. My gold will even eat fruit like this. All you do is hard boil an egg, peal the fruit you decide two feed ,and blend the egg in water to lquify it . then dip the fruit in the egg. This is how my tegus eat there fruit . They love it,and They get hardly any egg on there fruit. Good luck Russ

After raising and breeding Blue Tegus for over 10 years I can safely say that a 100% rodent diet for them is not only fine but preferable. Some of my largest, oldest, and most spectacular Blue Tegus have never seen anything but a rodent for a meal once they attained 18".

Blue Tegus are much more carnivorous then their counterparts in Argentina and do not require fruits or other food items at all.
