Some of my Kings (New Photos!)

Sasheena Oct 01, 2004 12:13 AM

Well I went and spent ten minutes snapping a bunch of photos. I had a surprisingly successful photo shoot!

Thought I would share some pictures of new and old snakes... didn't get all the snakes, but did get a bunch:

First picture is Symphonia De Chocolate a beautiful cal king:

Jester was purchased from Kerby Ross of Lonesome Valley Reptiles. One of my first snakes! He's quite an escape artist... his first escape, he crawled into bed with hubby and me. Second escape and he was in the toilet. Third escape and I thought I had lost him forever.... but he showed up in a mouse cage.

Here's a picture of two of my expected pairings for next year. At the least I'll be crossing him to my Newport Phase Cal king and my aberrant banana cal king. He might also be crossed to a Splendida, and/or an albino aberrant banded cal king.

I like that one.

Bishop - Another of my first ever snakes, is a beautiful high white cal king purchased from Kerby Ross of Lonesome Valley Reptiles. He's a proven breeder two years in a row.

Next year I hope to breed Bishop to two of my beautiful cal kings. One is a 5 foot desert phase banded cal king. The other is a smaller milk chocolate and lemon banded cal king.

Oh thats nice. How is his personality?

He has a very nice personality. He's nabbed me a couple of times when my hands have been mousey, but generally, he's very easy going like most of my snakes.

Tigris is one of my slow growing cal kings, I purchased her over the Internet. She and her sister Euphrates were too small to breed this year, but they've been growing like crazy and will definately be ready to go next year.

Sister to Tigris, and very similar, I hope to breed her next year.

Licorice is one of our largest cal kings, age unknown. She had two clutches this year, but alas, I was unable to enjoy any of the babies. The first clutch of fifteen eggs, which she laid 16 days after the pre-laying shed, all died a few weeks into incubation. She escaped about eight days after her pre-laying shed with her second clutch, and returned after having laid the eggs *somewhere*.... 60 days after she returned, the outside cats left a half-eaten newly hatched cal king hatchling on our porch. So at least her second clutch survived to hatch. Hopefully next year we will have more luck with her.

Here's Yertyl... I've posted lots of pictures of her, and here's a new one.... just moments before she lunged to bite me, the little vixen! Luckily she didn't quite connect with the camera. (or my fingers). She's quite a beautiful young snake!

Here's Pandora, who's had a number of pictures posted. She's 46 inches long as of today. She had a clutch in '03 (see Yertyl's picture) but this year didn't lay any eggs, even though she did breed four times with her mate. Then he passed away. So she has no concrete plans for next year until/unless I purchase a mate for her.

Nice looking snake - would love to pair her with my 75" male. I know he's very big, but I know it's possible. . . . Hoping to find a mate for him by next year before he gets too old!

I do have other kings not pictured here... the Outer Banks Kings you sent me didn't work out.... the kinked one took a little coaxing but I got him eating and did well, then he unexpectedly died, no observable cause. The female was voracious from the start, but alas, she escaped from a cage with an unseen flaw (until it was too late)... I was distraught, and then happy when hubby found her "treading water" in the swimming pool.. she didn't appear to be water-logged, however she did have a "dent" around her neck, and I'm thinking a bird caught her and released her into the pool. Something must have been injured. She ate twice and then died. The aberrant male was a huge guy, but he NEVER ate. He lasted about 8 months and I offered him gerbil pinkies (live, dead, brained), Rat pinks (live, dead, brained), mouse pinks (live, dead, brained), even fence lizards (alive), house geckos, and scented variations of the above, scented with cornsnake, kingsnake, lizard, frog... everything I could think of, he wouldn't eat. I never had a small enough live snake to tempt him with, and eventually he starved to death. *sigh*

I think she's a female, but still not entirely sure. She was purchased (as an Eastern Chain King) from a local petstore.

to funny pet stores!e.king ha anyway that is a GEORGEOUS splendida i have some from w.tx that have quite the speckling in nape and head but those sockhead hiblack back splendidas just kick butt very cool may she be a female and produce well for you,,,,,,thomas davis

I will probably cross her to a Cal King unless I find her a mate. Hubby loves her look, which is why we bought her in the first place. He kept saying he wanted an Eastern Chain, because he'd seen one in the petstore, and finally I went with him and we traded a bunch of rats for the snake, and I was glad he got what he wanted, in spite of the fact that she isn't an Eastern... if that is what he wanted... looks wise... then that is what he got... regardless of name.

If she turns out to be a he, then I'll cross him to one of my banana aberrant cal kings. Or just give him more furry meals and enjoy the looks, which are quite beautiful.
