Healthy animals at Reptile Shows???

sarahsea Oct 01, 2004 08:26 AM

Hi! I have been trying to find a reputable breeder in my area from whom I can get a baby German Giant. There is only one such breeder in my area, and she had an electrical problem and all her eggs died.

Tomorrow there is a huge reptile show in my area. Can I find healthy animals there or is it just like a big pet store?

Thank you,
Sarah

Reptile shows are great, they are mostly breeders displaying their own animals. It should be easy to pick out a nice healthy specimen.

Reptile shows are a great place to check out some amazing animals.. and they are also a great place to expose yourself and your reptiles to various diseases that can range from causing your reptile to get sick or death.

If you purchase from a show I would buy from a breeder that practices strict quarantine procedures at the show and doesn't allow anyone and everyone to handle and pickup their dragons. You are asking for trouble.

Rob & Vicky Dachiu have one of the best setup displays for showing off their dragons and not letting people come in contact with their dragons.. this minimizes the spread of diseases to both their collection and yours if you buy their animals.

Not trying to be dramatic, it's just the sad truth now a days. Buy from someone that practices good quarantine and you will minimize your risk. Any new reptile should be quarantined before exposing to your collection regardless of where you buy.

Shows are a lot of fun. wash your hands often and don't touch a lot of reptiles before picking out the dragon that you are happy with.

Goodluck and have fun,

I got my dragons from a expo and the info they gave was just like the petstore info. They rambled on about the ease of care etc..when in reality they are not that easy to care for.. The bd I got also had a very large portion of her tail missing and in my ignorance assumed it would grow back and the seller never even mentioned it..I also bought a snake that was supposed to be eating fine and to this day I still have problems with its eating habits..I wouldnt trust the expos completely, its still about money with some breeders..But there are more choices and I think more info available at expos.
