HEALTH CONCERN..... ADVICE

03svtcobra Oct 01, 2004 08:29 AM

i had a famale brb in a 40 gallon aquarium. unfortunatley she passed away from unknown causes but i have a feeling it was respitory problems. can that be genetic b/c he has gotten it more than once. i always jept the humidity up in her tank and she still managed to get it.

anyway, i have an orange male i would like to put in the tank. am i able to put him in it witou him gettin a respitory problem b/c i know that other snakes can get it from another ( i think ). do i have to wah the tank with anything that might diinfect anything without hurting the snake.

or can i just put him in and everything will be fine. the tank has not had anything in it for months.

sorry if this sounds like a stupid question. any advice would be helpful.

thanks
steve

For cleaning, I use a product called Virosan. It is a Anti-bacterial/anti-fungal solution that can be purchased from www.proexotics.com. In a diluted form, it is completely safe for reptiles, even if ingested(though I am unwilling to test that claim). Many Vets. actually use it as a mouthwash for animals going into dental surgery.

As for the tank...if by "tank," you mean aquarium with a screen top, they are not suitable enclosures for Rainbow Boas. Humidity is nearly impossible to maintain in an screen top. Manufactured plastic cages or rubbermaid/sterilite containers are ideal for BRB's because they are enclosed. I would clean the snakes enclosure once a week with Virosan, and once a month with a .05 bleach solution. One cap full for one gallon of water, and make sure you rinse it out really well.

Other than that, if you check out Jeff Clarks' webpage you will find the answers to most basic husbandry needs. Follow those guidlines, keep his enclosure clean and I doubt you will run into any problems.

Good luck, Chris O

very well and everything in it. Use new substrate and make certain all your husbandry stuff is within the specified ranges for BRB's. Like Chris already mentioned, double check that caresheet.

Respiratory infections are not genetic however genetics may be involved in a not so good immune system response to infection. My understanding is that almost all problems are due to husbandry errors.
