White's Tree Frogs Question

wsurugby10 Oct 01, 2004 11:16 AM

I'm looking to house 2 White's Tree Frogs and I was wondering what I needed. I have a 29 gallon tall tank with many things to climb on. What I really need to know is what I need for heating and lighting. I'm new to this species and I'm not sure what bulbs I should use. If you could help I would appriciate it.

Well so far you're doing good with having a 29 gallon aquarium and plenty of things to climb on! What are you using as a substrate? And of course make sure you have water dishes for them to soak in at night or whenever they need to. As far as bulbs and lighting...I just use a clip light with a bulb I bought from the petstore for reptiles and amphibians. You can also use the long ones as long as it's set up outside of the cage so they don't burn themselves on it. If you go to www.petco.com, you can go the reptile and amphiban decor, lighting, housing, etc. and take a look at what kind of lighting they have. I'm honestly not sure what watt bulb I have but it puts off enough heat. I have also used and under tank heater for extra heat in the winter...but only to help give off a little more heat in the cage. I just used a small one since tree frogs shouldn't be seeking heat sources from the ground. Also keep away from heat rocks...those can burn them very easily. I can't remember what the entire message you posted said...but I covered what I remember of it. Do you have any live plants? Just as a suggestion if you don't yet, the snake plant is a very good plant for White's because it's very hardy and they obviously tend to be on the bigger side. Very low maintenance to take care of as well, and live plants help with humidity. Any other questions ....feel free to ask! I have 4 White's and they're all doing great! I love having them as pets!

Whites tree frogs are very good pets. You are doing well to buy a 29 tall. Thats what I'm keeping my two babies in. I cant afford pet store light bulbs, (I live in Canada and the 120 watt full spectrums are $160!) so I just go to Home Depot and buy a $3 grow lamp. They seem to be flourishing in that 60 watt. You dont even need a lamp wuth UV rays. The frogs prefer it, and I conducted a little experement with them, and for 3 days, I put them under a 60 watt regular bulb, and they did'nt eat as much. As soon as I turned on the UV bulb, they were eating like CRAZY! It was very interesting to watch! Just buy your bulbs from home depot. You'll save a TON of money. As far as an under the tank heater, you dont need one. I have one that I bought in the US at Petco in the clearance section for $3. Its very small (3x5 in) but it was a bargan. They dont ofter come down to it, but since it has been getting colder, they have been sitting over it more and more. You dont need a fogging maciene, I have one for the dry winters, but its not needed. It looks very pritty, and my frogs seem to enjoy it, but by no means is it nessacary. You have to moniter how long you leave ot on, or else mold starts to grow. I would not reccoment thos waterfalls. I have a small one, and my frog always sat in it. For some odd reason, he preferd it to his water bowl. Well, one morning, I found him stuck in one of the chanels the water comes down from. Let me tell you- It was NO fun getting him outta there. I think this covers most of your question, so I hope this helps!
