Using computer fans for ventilation. Advice?

gabrielmtl Jun 27, 2003 12:25 PM

I am finishing up my vield chameleon cage right now, its 48 inch hing, 24 deep 24 large. I want to put 2 computer fans at the top, where the lights are, to give more air circulaiton. I have a whole bunch of new computer fans, ranging in size and power. I could probably hook them up to a computer powersupply, but it's big and noisy.

Anybody has a idea on how I could hook them up? They have to go on a timer, so a standard plug at the end is obviously required.

Thanks in advance, and have a good week end!

Hi Gabriel, to wire up a computer fan you will need something to change the power supply from 120v to whatever your computer fans are rated (I think their usually in the 9 or 12 volt range, although I could be wrong). I don't know if you have Radio Shack up there in Canada but you can buy a power supply that changes the output from 120v to whatever your fans are rated at. These will have a regular plug to plug into the outlet. If you don't have radio shack, I'm sure in Montreal their is some type of equivalent that has electronic/electrical supplies. You can always try calling your local electrician and ask what electrical supply stores there are in your area. You may be able to order one right through them (although they may charge you more for their trouble.) Hopefully this was what you were looking for. Take care, Scott.

I use them all the time for my snake cages and reef hoods. You can get a variable voltage 12V pack at Walmart in the audio section (ones that walkmans take). Or Radioshack. Cut the ends and splice to the fan ends. The pack has a switch so you can control the speed of the fan or even dim items with it. Never failed or had issues with them.

Another option is to buy a 120V computer fan, and just wire it straight to the plug. They can be a little hard to find, but I know Radio Shack sells one for about the same price as the transformer you would have to buy to get a 12V fan to work.

For the record, I run a 12V with a variable speed transformer that I bought from WalMart and it works great. The added bonus of speed control is great!
