In Florida we have Cypress Mulch galour for substrate, but I already know what a pain that becomes overall from past experience so I'm trying to find a good workable substrate. There are no good deserts or riverbeds nearby to dig up my own dirt, just lots and lots of sand and clay. I read on Proexotics about decomposed/composted granite and have hunted around for that, but unless Charlie, Frances, Ivan or Jeanne dropped some off on their way by, that doesn't seem an option.
In my searching and calling gravel/fill places in the area they brought up screened limestone as an alternative to decomposed granite (I guess both are used for the same things in the construction world). Has anyone used limestone for a substrate? Or does anyone know of any problems there might be with using it? I searched the forums, but most of the posts have to do with amphibians and the ph balance of limestone.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
