What can I feed to baby beardies????

lindsay78 Jun 27, 2003 12:34 PM

I'm out of baby crickets, and I'm not sure what else I can feed them incase of an emergency like this.

I put lettuce in yesterday evening, and they ate a bit of that.

Suggestions?
I have 13 little piggies, that are always hungry.

Help?!

1/4 inch crickets, finely chopped greens (NOT lettuce), and juvenile Rep-Cal bearded dragon food.

It sounds to me like you need to do some homework. You should be feeding more than just crickets all the time. You need to be offering veggies and I suggest using RepCAl pellets too.

How many RepCal pellets do you offer a baby beardie? I just got mine in the mail yesterday. I soaked about a teaspoon of them in OJ and scattered them over her salad (made with kale, mustard greens, and mango for today). Then I poured the crickets in over that.

Should I be giving her more than a teaspoon in hopes that maybe she will accidently eat more of them? She has never been introduced to them before this.

I'd say a tsp is a good starting place.....once you see them eating a couple, you can add more. It takes some of them awhile to develope the taste for them and some never really care for them when offered alternatives.....I myself use it as a supplement, but there are many breeders who use it as a staple successfully.

It would depend on how much veggies you are giving. I like to cover the veggies with pellets so they have to go through them to get to the veggies.
Just this morning I saw my 2nd clutch run to the bowl and eat mostly pellets and not much veggies. I think they are really liking it.

Hope that helps.
Oh,, if you see that it doesn't eat anything because the pellets are covering the food, then just mix it up a bit with your fingers, then they will eat. It does take some longer to get going on them.

yes its normal for a baby not to eat his/her greens, sometimes it takes a little time for them to catch on. I would be offering a base of collard greens, and to that you can add bok choy, endive, escarole, watercress, turnip tops, and then some mustard greens, kale, parsley etc added here and there for variety. Keep offering her greens every morning before you feed crix, she will catch on eventually
