Albino Rat Severe milky eyes

rach27 Oct 01, 2004 05:51 PM

Hiya all , im looking for a bit of advice about jack my 8 year old rat snake , when i got him 3 months ago he had been badly looked after and had major problems shedding , after numerous baths he managed to shed in a complete piece but the skin was horribly thick and the area around the eye caps was majorly built up. about 5 days after shedding his eyes milked up again and they have stayed that way (3 weeks now) but they are really thick , almost like cataracts , has he gone blind ? is there anything i could do that could help him , hes my favourite

Are you sure he shed the eyecaps with the complete shed? There may be some remnants.

Well i took him and the shedded skin to the local reptile shop and the guy said it looked like he had shed completley but as i said there was a huge build up , what would i need to do if he hadnt shed the eye caps completly?

I had my ball do that on one eye, i bought shed ease and followed directions and it worked, there are a number of different varieties available now I use the one where you pour so many ounces in gallons of water and then there is the spray directly on it kind. Good Luck

Many thanks for the advice , im going to put him in a pillowcase and see how we get on , it makes me so mad that his problems were caused just because the guy who had him grew bored of him , i wasnt even looking for another snake but there was no way i was gonna leave without him!
I'll let you know how i get on , fingers crossed

Multiple retained eyecaps are very bad.If it were you I would dampen a pillowcase put your rat in it and rubberband it shut. Then put it back in its cage with heat and leave it alone for 24 hours. If the pillowcase dries out mist it.There almost comes a point of no return if it's real severe. If the pillowcase method doesnt work it will have least softened the eyecaps then gently try to pry them off with your fingernail. If your not comfortable doing this a vet will come in handy.I aquired a ball python like that and the vet ended up taking one eye out.The vet was able to save one eye and one was enough.Good Luck and let us know how it turned out...Paul
