Prolapse

Bodhisdad Oct 02, 2004 09:08 AM

Can anything be done, besides a visit to the vet, for a minor prolapse. I've had my boa soaking overnite on damp papertowels, she passed some urates but the tissue is still visible. Does the swelling go down on its own, or is manual reinsertion necessary? The tissue is protruding about a 1/4" or so. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanx, Clint

Dab a little neosporin on it and gently "rub" it back it. Once it's back in, massage the area around the prolased bowel to encourage good blood circulation to the area. I would give her a couple of weeks off from eating...and thereby giving her signifigant time between defications. When you go back to feeding her, I would start with meals 1/3 her standard size, and space them out a week apart.

Good luck, Chris O

A prolapse can be caused by parasites, so you might want to get it wormed or have a fecal done to make sure. If it prolapses again, one stich over the vent might be necessary. Rectum, darn near killed him... sorry, I had to say that.
Good luck-

I know a breeder that runs flagyl through boas after a prolapse in case the animal has G.I. tract bugs...

THE BEST THING TO DO IS TAKE A LUBRICANT SUCH AS VASELINE OR KY AND REINSERT THE PROLAPSE. THIS IS FAIRLY COMMON WITH MALE BOAS DURING BREEDING SEASON. AFTER REINSERTION, TAKE A PIECE OF DUCT TAPE (YES, DUCT TAPE)AND SEAL THE VENT FOR A FEW DAYS. OF COURSE, DO NOT FEED, WATER OR MIST THE ANIMAL DURING THIS PERIOD. I HOPE THIS HELPS.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, Duct-Fu is a coffee table manual of the many uses of duct tape- very informative. Maybe Bill's method will make it into the updated edition.

Hopefully they update the "User Tips" section with a warning about getting duct tape around your keyboards.
A helpful notation reguarding duct tape removel from CAPS LOCK BUTTONS SHOULD BE OF INTEREST to a few readers.
