She didnt make it...

Melisondra Oct 02, 2004 01:21 PM

Just wanted to let you all who've been helping me out here know... Aurora went in for surgery today strong (and apparently a bit hostile so the vet said, atta girl )
Apparently things were a real mess inside. The left side eggs hadnt developed enough to go down and the right side was just horrible. Apparently 3 eggs had broken, maybe from a fall or something. There were a couple brown ones, one HUGE one and just an all around mess. There is a chance one or two of the eggs might be viable enough to try to incubate which is my hope right now, but im still stuck in school. My parents are going right now to pick her up and the eggs and talk to the vet.

She went through the surgery just fine he said, but she just never woke up. They had a heart beat for awhile but she never started breathing afterwards, apparently thats a big prob with reptiles so he said. He sounded crushed that she didnt make it and I appreciate all he helped with.
Anyway just wanted to post the final results, and hopefully theres an egg in there or so that might make it. Im going to go have a good cry then start looking up more incubating info. At least I still have Gene, just now an empty cage next to his.

Thanks again everyone for the help and support, we really appreciated it!

I am very sorry for your loss and I know how you feel I too lost my female blue bar ambilobe the same exact way about a month month and a half ago. I hope you can save and hatch some of the eggs out which in my case unfortunatly they were infertile.

thanks all, just found out from my parents, they quoted us 270 for the process, they charged us 70 for it. I think I found my new reptile vet at least.
Unfortunately the eggs arent even calcified enough to make it, apparently they are still a redish-brown or something, no good shell formed. Oh well. It was worth a try...

You did what you felt was right, it sounds like it was to be a problem no matter what you may have done. Be good to yourself.

I'm so sorry to hear that... I was really hoping that things would go better for you and her. It's really hard. I'm glad that she at least had someone so great to look after her, and that she lead a happy life.

I know the sad feeling. I recently lost my female about a month ago, and due to egg laying problems too. I did my own operation(as grotesque as that sounds) and had my first look at what a chameleons innerds look like. That was my first ever chameleon death relating to egg laying problems in my many breedings.I'm still trying to figure out what went wrong. I'll post picture if anybody is interested too see how chameleon guts and a "bag" in her body carrying eggs look like.

Thanks for the posts I appreciate it alot. And im still looking on the bright side, she went sleeping, with no pain, and I still have my other baby to take care of, so all is not completely lost. I think that sometime later id like to get another chameleon, but id love to adopt one kind of like Lele did with luna maybe. Screameleons posted awhile about about possibly haveing chams available for adoption later, and I think I might send them an email sometime.Im also looking into sites and adoption clinics near me now and some of them seem to get chameleons often. Who knows maybe ill find that special one sometime.
I should be getting the x-ray from the vet sometime this week, im kind of interested to see what all was in there. I actually would be interested in looking at the pictures you took though. I dont know if you would want to post them on the forum (some people might object) But maybe send me a link or email them, I think it would be neat to see from my college major standpoint =)

Again thanks all for the emails and wishes, it means alot. Talk to you soon on here im sure

Heya,

I am really sorry to hear about your loss. It's never easy losing a pet to anything. However I also just wanted to say something about potentially incubating some of the saved eggs. As far as I know you and the vet were unable to find the true root of the problem. So would you really want to risk any of the potential young ending up the same way. This may be a fluke or a real genetic problem. Veileds are being inbred left, right and center. I am not saying that you do this so please don't take it the wrong way. But there is something truely going wrong in my eyes with the way that some chameleon species are being mass produced. We must keep in mind the law of nature. The strong survive and the weak don't. I am drifting from my point, but I just wanted to make you aware that incubating her eggs may bring the same problems with some of the young if or when they hatch.

And again I am very sorry for your loss and wish you better luck in the future.

Best regards,

Rene Imming.

Hi
No offense taken dont worry, and I understand about the genetic issue. The eggs I recieved wouldnt have made it anyway. They were too far underdeveloped. I do wish I could have gotten one though, she was a tough little girl and I think she would have had some strong little babies. The vet was astounded she was still as active (and hostile)as she was with what was going on in her. I dont think it was really bad genetics that happened it was just bad luck and not getting enough nutrients (old supplement, not drinking, me not being there etc). I think that at one point she had a fall which caused some major problems due to the 3 broken eggs on the right side. Oh well! Thanks for the comment though.
