Sexing R. Brevicaudatus ---> JaxMD and others?

chimbakka Oct 02, 2004 08:00 PM

I got my leaf chams today, they ended up being brev's instead of spectums. I called the store and talked to the guy there, and he is going to look into it for me. I am starting to like them though... they are neat. I think I'm going to keep them. BUT, I am worried that I have more than one male. Two have shorter tails than the one. If that helps... Also, I may have to take one (with shorter tail) back anyway, after getting him home and having a chance to look at him (or her) I saw a white bump on his head (poss shed skin that's stuck) and a few dark spots on his face (poss burns, at tips etc). i'm going to look at it more tomorrow. If the ones with shorter tails are male, then I'm going to have to get one that's a female instead anyways. These little guys can be hard enough to look after, I don't want to start with one/any with health problems this time around.
If anyone has any tips (or photos?) to help with sexing, please share!! I want to try and figure this out by Monday.
Thanks all!

Females have the shorter tails - so it sounds like you may have a male and two females. The eyes of the males also have some coloration - see the link for more details. As for the bumps I am not sure - can you post a pic?

Thanks for the link, very useful. I remembered that the tail had something to do with sexing, but I got it backwards. It's just as well... this way I don't have to worry
I will try and scam a digicam off of a friend if I get a chance this week... I have been working SO hard on enclosures I want to show them off! :D

The males have more of a yellowish color, and the stripes down the sides are more defined, or contrasting to the normal color. If you send me your regular E-Mail address, I can send you a picture with a male and female side by side.

Hey just got back, Keep the little Brevs they are a great starter into pygmy chams.... I have to share my baby.. Males are HIGHLY agressive towards eachother (as with most chams) but it sounds like you have a trio. hmmm burns? a pic would be great but males in their corting colors (green/yellow eye, with withe body and black spots stripes) he may just be struting his stuff for his gals.
