My new Varanus salvator togianus enclosure- faux rock and the works.... Pic

odatriad Oct 02, 2004 08:26 PM

Greetings everyone,

I just completed my Togian Water Monitor enclosure yesterday, and have since introduced them to their new environment. I am not sure if many of you know how dirty water monitors are when it comes to water pans/basins, but they crap in it many times a day, which makes changing a bit cat litter pan, out and carrying it to the nearest sink/toilet, as it spills all over the place, a pain in the arse... So, for their enclosure, I built a bulkhuead into the water basin, which leads down to a pvc pipe with a ball valve. Whenever I want to drain the water, I open it up, and it drains into a 5 gallon bucket... much easier than carrying an awkward, flimsy pan to dispose of the poo water...

I also decided to incorporate some of my rockwork into the enclosure, to provide them with many platforms to bask at different temps. I guess I could have made platforms out of plywood/tileboard, etc., but I wanted to make something aesthetically pleasing, so..... here's a pic of the cage.. just thought i'd share, maybe it'd give some of you some ideas.. Cheers folks, have a great day!

Hi Bob,

Congrats on your new aquisitions!! A

About the the rock work, Im curious as to how heavy it is? As well as how time consuming it is to do? Im also finishing up my salvator enclosure and after seeing your interior i may consider doing something similar. Do you have instructions on your site for the rock work?

Anyway, it looks great and know your animals will enjoy their new home.

PS Are the a guaranteed pair? Also what are their Svl measurements?

Cheers

Hey James,

Yes, they are a guaranteed pair. In fact, the female dropped a clutch of infertiles a couple of months ago. I did not take measurements of them, as I did not want to stress them out anymore, but I would say they are both shy of 4' in total length. From what I hear, they do not get much bigger, but we shall see once i start the daily feeding regiment.

As far as the faux rock, it is quite heavy, as it consists of a portland cement/sand mixture-2 layers at that. I would have to say that the most tedius aspect of its construction has to be attaching the diamond lathe to the wire framework. It takes a while to zip tie it in enough places, to make sure that the lathe is rigid enough to hold the cement. Email at odatriad@yahoo.com, and i'll gladly tell you the specifics.

Here's a pic of my backyard oasis that I am currently working on, but unfortunately hve put on the back burner, due to lack of free time between school, work, and my animals... What you see is the first "structural" layer. Atop that goes the textured layer, which is carved/sculpted/embossed, and colored to resemble real rock-there are many different techniques to do this with..

Cheers, thanks for the compliments....

bob
