thinking of getting an anaconda

maestrOwen Oct 02, 2004 10:46 PM

Most likely not any time soon as I'm going to college in a year, but maybe one day down the line...and my mom is thinking of getting one in the near future

so I've got a few questions

1. I know they can get pretty big...I've heard all kinds of sizes, even up to 30'...so, in general, how big do they get?

2. How do you keep yours?

3. temps/humidity?

4. I read about how mean and nasty they are...are they generally bitey snakes?

thanks...

Size-yellow male 6-8 ft and yellow female 8-14 ft (I will notch it up a bit from the last time I answered this as many agree females over 14 are more common than I gave credit)
green male 8-12 ft and green female 14-20 ft (I think it is unlikely to get one much over 20 ft but it is possible I guess)

temper- captive born and bred are usually well tempered especially when worked with. It all varies from snake to snake...I have seen them calm as can be without any handling and I have seen them need work. I have heard of them never calming down but I do not know how hard people work at it and that will need to be mentioned by someone who has had the problem...my anacondas are calmer than most my others.

temp and humidity - lowER than most pythons. high 70s up to mid 80s for temp and humidity over 50% should keep you good with an anaconda. soaking preferences is another art and you can read other posts or ask again if you do not know what I am talking about.

other info- poop smells bad and they do it more than anything i have seen with a said "slow" metabolism. Greens like chickens when babies and the switch can be difficult. you need to love them or they can cause you to want to give up. I try not to get any snake I am not absolutely fascinated with and intend to research to the max and stick it through their problems.
