growing grasses

krim5 Jun 27, 2003 01:42 PM

I bought some great grass/weed seeds from Turtle cafe. I planted it, it grew great, my sulcata loved it. Then these little bitty gnats started buzzing around it and the grass died shortly after. That was on my screened in patio. So I tried to do it in the house. Same result. How did them little nasty buggers get in the house?? Do you think they killed the grass? Any suggestions?

now that you mention it I vaguely remember that happening to me
too. I think it was when the soil was too wet - make sure you've
got drain holes and have it sitting inside another dish to drain
the water off. I didn't worry about it because it wasn't long
and that whole concept of growing grasses inside went out the
window, too much time and it wasn't long before it wouldn't
be enough to feed a mouse on. Put the seeds in your yard, some
of the stuff I planted keeps coming back every year. I really
do need to get some more though and increase the area.
Oh, I "watered" my indoor garden with a spray bottle, kept it
from getting too wet, that might help with the magic bugs.

in the pic below (1999 one) you can see the double saucers
and planter on the seeds that I was growing also.

thanks for the advice. I think that was my problem it was too wet. I will try the spray bottle trick. I tried planting some outside about 2 weeks ago and my neighbor laughed at me literally. She said its too hot in Florida for grass seed. Well she was right, I watered it faithfully for a week or so to no avail.
