Here's a little guy I found out hiking not too long ago. I first thought it was a garter snake because I had seen two just before I saw him, but as I got closer, and it stopped moving I realized it was a racer.

I am pretty sure it's a yellow-belly, but not positive.

his wound goes down to his vertebrea, and some of his ribs. I decided to keep him.....until his wound heals up. I am not even sure if it will, but he is pretty active and he functions normally.

Any ideas if he will heal up?????

Can't say for sure that he is a yellowbelly (if it's in that range it is likely to be. As to the wound. If he eats, he will recover. I have seen worse survive and it looks like he is healing.

Sorry, hit the post button too soon. There is a chance he might heal. My adult yellow belly has a very nasty scar on his back where it looks like someone tried to cut him in half or something.

We can only hope. I wish him the best.

Thanks for the info.

He does not eat on his own.......but is very very cooperative when I feed him. I will just hold him, and touch his lip with a small plastic tool, and he will just open his mouth as wide as he can, and will keep it open until I drop the cricket in, and he will chomp down and swallow it on his own.

I will of course keep trying him to feed completely on his own, Maybe after he heals up he will...either way, He should be ok.
