My Tokay is ill, please help

desertgecko Oct 03, 2004 10:29 AM

Hi, I hope someone can help. Something is wrong with my female Tokay gecko and Im really worried that I will lose her. Ive had her about 2 years now and shes never been like this before. Last week I noticed she was very dark and had this blue/purple 'glow' on her back and tail. You could only see it if you were at an angle to her. I put it down to her about to shed, but I don't think thats it. She would have done by now.

She has also lost weight and is not eating. Two days ago I found her clinging to the lightbuld when I turned it on in the morning. I got her off but she climbed back on while it was on. I thought she burned her feet as she was walking 'on tip toes' so to speak. Now all she does is stay out all the time, she doesnt hide. Shes permantly dark and her back legs and tail are funny. Her tail is curled up a lot and just looks weird, could just be cos its thinner then normal. She sits there with her back legs stretched out so her back is arched up. Her front legs seem ok. Last night she was kinda fitting. she was walking along and her back legs kept coming off the wall and she was basically rolling over. She was like it on the ground too, her back legs were as if they were trying to flip her on to her back. It was awful to watch as I couldnt do anything

I don't know why shes stopped eating or has gone like this. I expected her to be dead this morning. She has never stopped eating before, and has always had a big appetite.

What is wrong with my Tokay??

Claire

It really sounds like you need to take her for a vet visit. Hopefully you have a knoweledgable one around you. Could be many things and you don't want to guess. Have you been supplementing her with calcium and reptile vitamins, one of which would include D3? Really sorry to hear after having her for 2 years.

Hi, thanks for the reply!

I am taking her to a vet in an hour. I do supplement with calcium, but i havent with vitamin D3. I did not realise this I thought calcium was enough. I hope the vet can help and that she's not too far gone to be treated.

I will post the outcome later.

Thanks,

Claire

Hope all goes well and let us know what the vet says. D3 is what helps nocturnal reptiles process calcium in their bodies. Without it their bones would soften and distort even though they get calcium, its called Metabolic Bone Disease. This may not be your Tokays problem but some of the symtoms you described brought it to mind. If the disease is not to far advanced it can be reversed. Good luck, very interested being a Tokay breeder on what you find out.

Well, the vet seems to think she will be ok. He believes she has MBD through lack of d3. He gave her 2 injections, on of betadine (i think) as she had a small gash on one foot. I think she done it when i tried to get her out of her huge hollow log. Its ok now. The other injection was of calcium/d3 which will give her a boost. I then need to give her the d3 orally. He said this could be done by her eating the food with it on. Hopefully the injection will get her eating again.

He also weighed her and shes only 45g lost a lot of weight. She used to be a fat thing! In my tokay book it says adults should be 150g minimum so shes got a long way to go yet.

I hope the vitamin d3 i ordered turns up today. I don't know how long the injection will last before it starts wearing off. I will keep you updated on her progress.

Thanks for your help!

Claire
