There's been a loss in my herp family... =(

shopunke Oct 03, 2004 01:03 PM

I know this forum isn't for frogs, but I also know that several of you have frogs of your own. Well, last night, Froggy passed away. I had him for only a year, but I'm pretty sure he was at least three years old... I don't know why I'm telling you this... Maybe to just vent a little? He had a proper burial. He's missed terribly. Losing one pet really and truly makes you appreciate the others.

Oh, and by the way, I'm moving back to calcium sand substrate for the lizards. Should be better than the dirt.

I'm glad you're replacing the Bed-A-Beast. I might have mentioned it previously, but I have had problems with my leaf chameleons if they ingest it. It's an awesome sterile medium, but it should be reserved for those species who are in less danger of ingesting it accidentally.

Also, I might have missed it in one of your previous posts, but did you ever take a fecal sample to a vet? That's pretty important in order to determine whether the animals have internal parasites in the form of "worms," or whether they have a blood protozoan (also considered parasites). I say this because some blood protozoans cannot be eliminated (not even with PARAZAP), such as it is in the case of HEMOGREGARINA. These protozoans live in the reptile's bloodstream and they prevent them from gaining weight. When stress is present, the parasite takes over and the animals can become dangerously compromised.

I know you're looking for someone to take a look at a sample. I don't know if this is possible through the Postal Service (or even legal), but if it is, and if you can't find someone else in your area to do so, you could send me a couple of FRESH fecal samples and we could look at them. They would probably need to be prepared somehow so that they do not dry out during shipping, but at least we could look at them under a microscope see if they really have compromising parasites. If nothing comes up, then chances are they have blood parasites.

Anyway, this is just an option. Give them parazap since you already have it in-transit, and maybe you could send a sample later...

Good luck!

I'm so sorry about your cute froggie. It hurts so bad to lose a pet. I have a feeling the lizards will get better with everyone here pulling for them.]
And Fabian, you seem like a heck of a nice guy! I must admit tho, I still have the giggles from this image in my mind; Fabian getting busted for receiving lizard poop that was transported across state lines!! (That makes it a federal offense, right?) hehehe

Hi Valerie,

I have never really thought about the legality (or lack) of interstate fecal trade. You're probably right, but I will double check with the vet tomorrow when she's back. Has anyone else shipped lizard feces across state lines (people must think I'm crazy)?

I guess the only remaining option is the one suggested by others originally. There must be someone that is willing to do it and interpret the results without charging too much (in her state)

Thanks for the note, Valerie... I tried!

Awww, I was just teasing! I was imaging law enforcement taking this on instead of the many other things that would seem more pressing and then the giggles took me over. (You are not going to sell that poop at a grade school, are you? Uh oh, here I go again!) But, I imagine there is a law (there always seems to be one) to protect the local flora and fauna. (At least, that was the excuse I used when we were in Louisiana and my boyfriend caught an armadillo and wanted to bring it home with us!)

well the way that i would think about it is that you can ship an animal across state lines who can make poo in the box and you can hang up and i am sure ship artwork with "feces paint" on it, so why wouldn't you be able to actually just ship the feces by itself?

i am sure it has been done before, but i know a couple years ago this guy used elephant dung on a painting that was controversial and it was hung up somewhere in NYC. then, as always, other people decided to join in on the "fad" some use endangered species poo, some people just good ol' cow poo. that is about all i know about it

you know,

Perhaps I'm uncultured or something, but when people resort to using excrement for art, it is clear that they have a crappy job and need either some guidance, or time to go back to school. I just don't buy into it; but that doesn't mean the people who buy the art can't. Shoot, if people hate money that much why argue? After all, if i could make money like this maybe I would...... =) I dunno. Well, thats my philosophical wax for the moment.

don't worry. you are not uncultured. i concider myself cultured and i would never buy into that kind of art. if the human race has evolved this far only to resort to using poo for communication, then there are some things wrong . anyway, i have PLENTY of poo art in the lizards' cages at times. "poop on a rock" is my favorite piece of art
