New to Beardies

moko Oct 03, 2004 02:43 PM

Sapphira,we think she's a female, has been growing by leaps and bounds. She is a fine looking girl about 3 months old and 16" from the tip of her nose to the tip of her tail. She's an excellent eater and so much fun to interact with. Here's our question:She likes to bask and open her mouth. Is this normal behavior? Many times we squirt her and she seems to like that.

Nice to see you getting around, hehehehe ! My collared buddy!

Yes it is quite normal, it is called Gaping! Just like a dog panting to cool it self.

The only time you would worry, if they continued to have their mouth open and you heard wheezing, or noise when they were breathing.
Then it would not be normal cooling, it would be a respiratory infection, and breathing distress.

But yours seems to be Gaping!

yes it is normal. since bearded dragons cant sweat they open there mouths to let off a little heat. it is also a good thing to see because i means that the dragon is basking under temperatures that it is comfortable with.
