handling

bmelv24 Oct 03, 2004 03:28 PM

I know that Chams are not to be handled alot, but i have also heard that some tolerate it. I have had my 3.5 month old male panther for almost three weeks now, and I want to at leat be able to handle him for cleaning and things like that. I just hand fed him crickets this weekend and he had no problems taking crickets from my fingers. He usually just runs away if my hand is near him unless it has food in it. Today I tried t get near him and see if he would walk onto my hand. No hissing or anything and he didn't run as fast this time. I actually got him to put one foot on my finger. Does anyone have any tips or am I going about it the right way??

some chams allow handling and some don't. My veileds all let me hold them for long periods of time. Just keep hand feeding him and hold him for 10-20 minuted per day if he crawls on u. If you do that he should be used to u soon. I've used this method with my veileds which I got all of them at at least 3 months old so they were old enought to know how to bite me. It worked on all except for one because we had a bad experience.I woke him up while he was asleep because he somehow got on the ceiling of his cage when the lights went off. Anyway just make sure u don't handle him too much. I f he starts reaching for a lot of stuff put him back in the cage.

Sounds OK to me. Hand feeding is great. Also remember his personality may change once he reaches sexual maturity. Still, if he knows what to expect from you that's the important thing. If you really have to move him and he's being a pain, use a stick as a moveable perch. Coax him onto the branch (a good size so he can get a firm grip) with a hand, let him climb onto it himself, and have a location in the house planned that you can take him to. If you have a nice sunny spot in a houseplant by a window for example he may enjoy going there for a basking session. That way he'll know a trip out of the cage is a good thing.
