My hyper ornate

GTPs-N-Blueys Oct 03, 2004 07:32 PM

I have a CB ORnate and he is very skittish. When I open the cage door, he bolts and I have to chase him around the cage for like 5 minutes. I was wondering if this is normal because when ever I go to a show there are nigerians the just look fat and lazy. Will he calm down with age because I've been workin with him for almost a year now. Thanks.

wow i must be tired.. when i saw 'hyper', i thought of a morph for an ornate. hehe neways, my ornate was like that when i first got her too. shes a little better now but still skittish. i usually hold her and then put back in tank for feeding. i as well am waiting for the fat lazy type although why would u want that, its more fun for them to move around :P

Ares is a fat lazy mali. It's cool cause he just chills on my shoulder and will fall asleep and stay that way until I move him again, he loves the cuddling.

My saharan uro Orion is skittish. But I find this weird: I've had Ori since July and I just got Iris less than a month ago and everytime I put my hand in the cage, she runs to it and starts climbing my arm before I get the chance to move my hand out of the cage. It's cute, sometimes Ori comes to my hand and licks it only to see if there's food or not.

It'll take some time I'm hoping Ori gets calmed down.

Mine is the same way. I had my ornate for 10 months. Everytime I get to close to the cage he jumps and if I put my hand in there he goes nuts. I can't wait til he calms down even if it is a little. Wish there was something I could do to gain his trust. Oh Well maybe it just needs more time.

I can tell you my experience with a hyper ornate---I had a little female about 8-9 months old that was housed by herself and was very hyper reactive--she would glass dance, pace, and generally act stressed out and uncomfortable...When I added a baby male ornate, all that changed...she now follows him everywhere, eats with him, basks with him and sleeps with him. No more hyper activity, very little glass dancing, and she actually put on quite a bit of weight..If I handle one of the lizards, which is mildly stressful, when I put it back in the tank it immediately runs to its tankmate and buddys up with it for a few minutes...They really seem like they take comfort from each other's presence. ..It makes me wonder if, in nature, clutch mates maybe hang out together for the first couple of years as a sort of protective thing...I don't know, but it's interesting...Anyone else have a similar experience?
