Some South Carolina watersnakes from this weekend

PiersonH Oct 03, 2004 07:46 PM

Here are some watersnakes I caught this weekend at the Savanah River Site near Aiken, SC.

A nice yearling Banded Watersnake (Nerodia fasciata fasciata)

I got the chance to participate in an aquatic snake trapping study and we turned up many Black Swamp Snakes (Seminatrix pyagea). This species is nearly 100% aquatic and so is very hard to find without minnow trapping or dredging.

They can be amazingly abundant in the right habitat.

You got style Pierson! Very nice banded and beauty swampers!! I think this is the first time (at least mine) that we've had these guys here from the wild. They would be a treat to rear.

I think that bandedds are some of the most beutifuol of the waters. I like the red phases. I don't know much about thte swamp snakes. I mean i know basic info but not into detail. I'll go read my book now.
