Question for PHeve OT

sunfox Oct 03, 2004 08:05 PM

I saw you on the Uroplatus forum and since you're the only one I really know there, I wanted to ask you about Satanic leaf-tailed geckos. I am considering eventually getting a pair (maybe even a trio) and I was wondering how difficult they are to care for. I kind of skipped the whole leo gecko thing and got right into uromastyx with zero herping experience (just book knowledge from caresheets). I think I've done a good job so far.
Anyway, my question is: since I've cared for uromastyx, do I have enough herping experience to properly care for Satanics or are they for more advanced herpers?

Thanks

in a trio of Uroplatus phantasicus (satanics) you should go for it.
They are awesome geckos, a smaller leaftail, about 5 -6 inches, but I think they have the coolest tail of all.
Resembles a dead leaf and looks so dang realistic !

Although I have not kept them, I keep 3 uroplatus henkeli, I think the hardest is keeping their temps proper.

A cooler 65- 80 usually good at 70- 75 degrees ! Most are wc, some are slightly dehydrated when shipped. But I know many who have them on the uroplatus forum and like I say they are so awesome.

Just come over and hang out, ask as many questions as ya want, a friendly bunch, real helpful , love gecko talk And some are breeding satanics.

But I personally feel you would do fine with them!
Good luck with your gecko quest, hope ya pop over

Heres a pic of 2 of my uroplatus henkeli leaftails a pair, they get large at about 12 - 14 inches

SunFox was asking about a smaller species of uroplatus called satanics, very cool !

This species of leaftail gets like I said in last post about 12 - 14 inches long, and is really cool walking up your arm , heheheheh

They are all nocturnal ! Awesome watching them hunt, they just divebomb down, ya hear thumps, until they get their full.

They are different looking thats for sure, when sleeping on a branch, they become the branch, take on the same color. Sometimes its hard to find them,

I kept hearing about the uroplatus but had never seen a picture or knew what they were. Those are really fascinating!

My experience is that Geckos are display creatures, not really for handling, is that true?

is that tokays are definitely not for handling. those things are down right scary. like 10 years ago, a guy sold one to my sister as a friendly animal and when i went to look at him with the top off, he came flying out of the cage and tried to attack the towel my wet hair was in! after he barked at us for an hour, while trying to get him in the cage, we took the pleasant little fellow back to the pet store.

yes, Tokays are the ones I have specifically heard bad things about. Particularly that the tend to bite, and they have very strong jaws...

There feet just look so cool!

But yeah Tokays can be quite aggressive, have to handle when really little and still are aggressive

These leaftails are great display, Nightime, but handled while young, they are nice, mine are all quite calm now , and can walk on you, and I let them out to walk around.

You get to know when they are going to jump they hunch their backs and then LEAP.

So when you do have them out is best to stay close to the ground , if they want to leap they will not get hurt!
