What is the easiest way to tell between these 2? Thanks.

Unfortunately, 'sand' monitor can mean many things to many people (those dang common names again), but I presume you mean either V gouldii or V flavirufus, as opposed to V panoptes (the argus monitor).

There are a number of differences, but the easiest way to tell is to look at the tip of the tail. On V panoptes horni (the one in the trade over there, assuming you are in the US) the tail bands go to the very tip. On V gouldii and V flavirufus, the tip of the tail is yellow or cream, without bands.
