Mate selection/Agressive Behavior in Hondurans?

Amro Jun 27, 2003 02:50 PM

Has anyone noticed agressive breeding behavior in male hondurans?
I have a male who is very aggressive, biting and generally harrassing all of the females he has been bred with, except one... I see him copulate with his "favorite" but never use any of the other associated agressive behaviors with her. Has anyone seen this? Also, any tips on getting him to tone it down? I worry he's going to really harm the other females.

In an unrelated question - is anyone expecting an outstanding hypo. definite het albino male this year? I am interested.

Thanks!
Amro

I have a large male Hondo (about 4 feet, .8 kilos) that is a VERY aggressive breeder. You would swear that he's trying to eat the female rather than mate with her. He will grab her by the neck or head and wrestle her into submission. My other Hondo males aren't quite that agressive, but they aren't exactly gentlemen either. It's just rough business...not much you can do about it.

Hi Amro,

better too aggressive than not aggressive at all, eh?!

you describe him being aggressive to all but one female, and she's the one that's apparently the best breeder. any chance his aggression with the others is because they're not so compliant--maybe they're simply not ovulating, so they resist or flee, whereas the good female raises her tale and they get about their business? his aggression could be efforts at persuasion that he'd use on the good female too, if she resisted?

Hey Terry!
Thanks for advice. Yes i would have to agree that "too aggressive" is better than nothing! On the other hand I've never seen a snake take such a fancy to a single female; almost as though there is some kind of mate selection (?). He is so docile with her anytime he encounters her (all through the spring and summer). And such a monster with the others.
I guess I'll have to see how the other females do. Would certainly be neat if only the "mated" female has good reproductive success while the ther two don't - supports your idea about the ovulation/readiness...
Best,
Amro
