Question about temporary heating for a large cage...

Charlotte Oct 03, 2004 10:54 PM

Building my retics cage, and realized that it would be a really good idea to figure out how to heat the thing before I finished it up! (and I need to finish it up quickly)
So, I'm going to be ordering a radiant heat panel to heat it.

But, until I get the funds and actually have it shipped to me, what is the best solution to heat a large 8 foot long, 4 foot deep, and just about a foot and a half high cage???

There isn't any place for a basking light, only flourescent lighting so he won't be sitting in the dark all the time.

Any suggestions?
I'm going around and asking in a few other forums as well.
Any and all help appreciated.
Thanks!
Charlotte

id say buy a large cobramat heat pad and put it on a dimmer. they are waterproof and can go right in the cage. should work fine but they cost a bit for the larger ones

Humna Heat pads are cheap have 3 settings and i have used them for many moons grasshopper! lol

seriously for your needs you can use them placed under the cage the thickness will dictate how long it takes to heat the floor .you could also attach oneon the back wall or roof which will also give ambient temps in the cage they cost between $9-$15 each and work well

If this large cage will be sitting in a relatively cool room this winter then it could be tough to heat it.

With most of the ways I can think of you'd be better off putting that money towards a radiant heat panel.

Except for one... cut one large ventilation hole in the cage just big enough to fit a aluminum dome light fixture into. Cover it securely with screen. Does not really matter if its on the top, side or back if you just use a 250 watt heat lamp for the cage.

If that prooves to be too much ventilation when you install the RHP then there are ways to plug the hole.

I write all of this under two assumptions... 1) that the cage will need significant supplemental heat (ie. a cool room) and 2) you you're strapped for cash and need to save as much money as possible for the RHP.
