What questions do I ask?

dragonbirds Oct 03, 2004 11:18 PM

I am tyring to find my senior dragons and my MBD survivors new homes. I have had a few people show interest but I don't know if I really trust they will be cared for properly.
What questions other than food, lighting, and enclosure should I ask so I know if they are going to a good home.

Even having adopted my beardeds from different people (All who kept beardeds themselves) I was never asked Q's, however I can understand your worry.

Possibly ask What experience with reptiles have they had?
Will it be a pet? (be handled often, etc.)
Or a pampered display animal? (Cared for, spared from stress)
Though often times beardeds can be both, however if yours are older or recovered from such as MBD, it may be wise to give it to an experienced person who knows what they are doing or can get much help (Part of a society perhaps?) Will handle it occasionally to give the things some love but nothing strenuous.

Obviously, they're your dragons and know what they can handle..

It really is too bad you're giving them up, but if you need the space, heh.
I'm curious though, where are you located?

Good luck!

I am in Fresno, Ca. The only reason I am trying to find them new homes is because my husband and I are trying to adopt a baby and I don't want them to be neglected once the baby is here.

Thanks,

I'm interested in them myself, it seems the only free herps I get are beardeds for some reason .
I sent you a message.
If you want a pic of my own beardeds ask.

If it were me, I'd ask the following questions:
Have you had any experience raising reptiles before?
What size enclosure do you have?
Will you be handling the dragon or keeping it as something "cool" to display?
Do you know how to properly handle this animal?
Do you have enough time during the day to properly take care of and maintain this bearded?
Do you have a reptilian vet who is familiar with these animals or not?

Then if I found a person who fits those questions I would have them come over to my house maybe 4 days a week and work with the animal that way I know that they are compatible and to make sure the transition is easy.

Then after about a two weeks (hopefully you aren't in a real hurry to get rid of them) of working that routine I'd go over to the person's house and inspect the new space/enclosure for the bearded and make sure temps are correct and everything they need is in the cage. Then I'd take my pet to the new "owners" house, give him/her big kisses and walk away.

I feel bad knowing you have to give up your pets. It must be tough.

Good luck with finding a person to take care of your babies.
