Range of EDBs in NC?

snakum Jun 27, 2003 02:57 PM

I have been invited to poke around on a large private reserve in Bladen Co. North Carolina, which the owner says is crawling with Canebrakes.

The Eastern Diamondback hasn't been seen in that area (I'm from Harnett Co. which is just north) in many years according to the somewhat dated info I have. Does anyone know if the EDB has been spotted in this area lately? My info is very old.

Crotalus adamanteus is a species of "possible occurance" in NC. I believe that only about a dozen specimens have EVER been documented in the state. The reports I have read state that its range actually begins about 100 miles south of the NC border. My info is only based on documentations and not field experiences.

People have told me that they killed them in Pender and Duplin counties in the pine scrub, but this was 25 years ago, and they were speaking about in the distant past. So I guess it would have been in the 1960s. I was in the woods every day back then and I never saw one there, despite actively looking (I was a twelve year-old budding herper).

I wonder how accurate the NC 'occurance maps' are. There are no dates available for the sightings so they may all be similar to the Eastern Coral snake record in Harnett Co. The only one that has been documented was in the 1960s, with none since.
