More on the the fleas and cypress....

crazydago18 Oct 04, 2004 03:48 AM

I'm getting the cypress from Home Depot, and i have been for a few years until now and havent ever had a problem before. Is it possible that the fleas came from somewhere else and multiplyed very quikly. I have no dogs or cats or anything like that. Also about heat treating or freezing the mulch - how might you suggest i do this with 8 - 10 bags of this stuff. My ovens not that big and niether is my freezing. Also is there anyone that lives in the clevelan, Ohio area that knows of anywhere to get orchid bark. Id like to try it but its no where around here, cypress is abundant though. Also does anyone know if there are diff kinds of cypress mulch or cypress bark or diff brands or anything that might have less of a chance of having mites, ticks, or flea. Thanks

are they fleas!!! a wood mite looks the size of a full stop similar to a flea size. do they jump? cos mites dont.

mites also multiply very fast. we spotted a few on the snakes and thought oh fleas. then 24 hrs later it was OH MY GOD!! if fleas dont feed on cold blooded animals what would their food source be to be able to multiply? if you got wood mites their food source would be cypress.

buying cypress from the depot can be risky up to press you have been lucky, alot of it is untreated. the guy at our pet store treats his wood himself. i know it works out more expensive but i prefer the piece of mind.

the doddgy batch i got was from another pet store which was a lot cheaper, but not in the long run after vet bills etc.
