Flaky Skin

Wyndham Oct 04, 2004 07:31 AM

Do tortoises shed? I have noticed that my leopard tortoise has some flaky sink. He constantly has water available and I usually soak him every other day. Is my humidity too high?

Thanks

Yes, all reptiles shed. Sometimes my Russian & Egyptian look down-right fuzzy due to shedding skin.

i've noticed that mine, at least, doesn't shed like my iguana did (in large-ish flakes). he just flakes a tiny bit at a time, and if i see something stiking up/out, i'll help him along a bit (as long as he doesn't seem too flinchy about it). i've mostly seen this on the top of his head. do they normally shed in such small pieces (i'm talking scale-by-scale)?

... it looks like a "skin-rejuvenation" process...

my redfoot can swim (but i only let him do so under very, VERY close supervision). i soak him every day, but every once in a while i fill his tub enough for some aquatic exercise! he kind of does a doggy-paddle...

Shellie swims also (under very close supervision) in the bathtub. She really likes it to be filled about 6-8 inches deep and then tort-paddles her way around. Hey...good way for exercise!
