Are 66% poss.hets worth it?

speedingbandit Oct 04, 2004 10:09 AM

Im seeing alot of 50 & 66% hets out there, but are they worth it..Unless you raise your own from your clutches i wouldnt get my hopes up..Some do turn out though.

I'd guess what makes them worth it is not the money you save on that particular animal, but the fact that you can now afford to buy two or three of these animals for the same price as a 100% het. If you buy three (from the same clutch), the odds are that at least one is going to be a 100%, while the other two still hold pretty good odds at giving you another 100% het. Pretty good deal if you're on a budget. I've thought about it, but I don't really have enough space to keep three (3) possibles. I'd rather save space and buy the 100% het. But that's just my Newbie opinion.

IMO yes they are...First off, 2 out of 3 prove (well theoretically)....Secondly, when you can't get your hands on 100% hets. of a particular morph then that is the way to go....I think 66% het. females are more worth it than males, just because the fact that if she doesn't prove you still have an adult breeding female (which are priceless...well according to the classifieds they are $650, haha)....But last of all, you can buy 2-3 66% het. females for the price of 1 - 100% het. female and with more girls you get a better shot a producing eggs....Think about it...If you are raising up 1 girl and she doesn't get to size or doesn't take than your only shot at hatching babies is down the drain for that season...If you have 2 to 3 girls you have that many more chances at getting eggs and if you have 3, odds are 1 shall prove and then u still have 2 breeding size females....That's all just me though....You can never have too many females, not with all the co-doms and doms out there....Good luck!

There is a misconception about your statement. It really doesn't matter if they are from the same clutch or not. The percentages don't change. You have the same chance at getting a het from another unrelated clutch that adheres to the same circumstances (66% or 50%). There is an illusion that makes one think there has to be a het from that clutch but I have seen (albino nelsons) a het x het breeding, double clutching, with 15/16 eggs albinos.

Just food for thought

You are 100% correct. Please forgive my ignorance and misinformation. By the way, did I read your post correctly? Did you say a Het x Het breeding resulted in 15 out of 16 being Albinos? Wow! Shouldn't the odds be about 4:16? I'm amazed!

Hoping I Have That Kinda Luck,
Chris =)

Just friendly info...no real harm intended...yup, 15/16 from a het x het breeding...showing that odds are just probabilities and to get better/worse is unusual but possible...another story I can think of is for hondos (ghost = double homozygous mutation--hypo and anery). A dble het x a dble het yielded 3 eggs (1/16 probability)--all 3 were ghosts

I purchased an entire clutch (3.5) of 50% possible het albinos in 2002. I only had one girl up to size last season and she laid 5 eggs. Here are the results from breeding that poss het girl to an albino.

Last year I bred a 66% chance het albino male to a 50% chance het albino girl. The only two surviving eggs where both albinos. Unfortunately they where also both horribly kinked so I don't have any general audience pictures to share. I guess good luck only goes so far.

I'd say she's possibly a het! ;p
