Pyro Pyro...

Sasheena Jun 27, 2003 03:19 PM

Hey folks, I've never bred a hybrid, and don't know if I will, but next year my female Pyro will be old enough and big enough to breed (she's an '01}. I hope to get a male Pyro this year, but he'll be a hatchling and unable to breed next spring. I was thinking of putting my Pyro with one of the male snakes I have and was wondering if there was a good cross with the available males. The males I have to work with are:

1. Aberrant male striped cal king.
2. High white cal king.
3. Appalachicola (blotched) king.
4. Normal Striped (het for amel) Corn snake.

I have females of all the above varieties of snakes, and I'm not SURE that I will, that I want to, etc. BUT I feel like keeping this in mind.

Does anyone have any pictures of Pyro crosses with cal kings, blotched kings, and/or corns?

Here is a pic of my Pyro:

I don't think any of those crosses have been done with a pyro. The Blotched may eat the pyro and the cal king would have naturally intergraded with zonata in the wild. So the cal king x pyro would be hard IMO becasue we would have seen some natural intergrades.
I am currently working with corndurans so the pyroxcorn may be your best bet. A corn X pyro would be really exciting!

I was worried about my Pyro being eaten, and if I attempted the cross with another king I would watch like a hawk to make sure I was breeding and NOT feeding. But I think that the corn combo will be the best as well, especially as the male is striped. It would be very interesting to see F2's from that combination. But of course, this is just a possibility for the future.

I personally think the COOLEST babies you could produce form that female would be derived from breeding her with another pyro pyro.

That being said...I would strongly advise against trying to breed her with any of the Lampropeltis getula. (cal king / blotched / brooksi etc) unless you are willing to risk her getting eaten.

My plan now is to breed her to another Pyro.

I guess hybridization is just not on my horizon any time soon. I'm sending her back to the original breeder, who will breed her with one of his males, and I'll be picking up a hatchling pyro male from the breeder also.

I'm not disappointed, as I don't really think I have the patience and ingenuity to hybridize. But that's fine, as I feel that I've done okay with the "pure" species.... Bred two clutches this year, out of 8 eggs from my cal king female I got 8 hatchlings (one died due to a severe hernia through the umbilical area), and from my blotched king I had 8 eggs, plus one slug, and got 8 good hatchlings.

Anyway, I like to think about the hybrids, and don't mind reading about them, but alas, I don't think that they are for me.

Thanks for the input everyone.
