We live in Northeast Alabama. There was a baby snake in our mud room that was black with bright - yellow/gold diamonds, the diamonds bled into the belly. Does anyone know what kind of snake this might be? It appeared to have round pupils.

Possibly a baby Eastern Black Kingsnake (Lampropeltis getula nigra). Try seaching for a pic of one on the web.
