Water Dish....

Krystal19_85 Oct 04, 2004 02:07 PM

Can anyone suggest a large water dish with a realistic look (IE: not plastic, looks like (or is) real rock), or tell me what I could use to seal a DIY water dish? I was looking at the Exo-Terra X-Large water dish, but then I saw a few in person and they still look really fake. I am trying not to spend $15 on a water dish, so all the epoxys I can find are pretty much out of the question. I have seen some really nice looking Rock bowls, but I can't seem to find them now. Keeping in mind this is for a 4' girthy ball python, does anyone have any ideas?

I'm probably not a big help here, but "naturalistic" for who? If it was for the python, your cage would be a tub of dirt, some grass and a burrow with a hot sun-lamp above it, and some farmland for an African village nearby. No rock waterfalls, ponds or anything like that. So you might as well use a plastic bowl.. very sanitary and easy to clean. You can also just ignore this post.

Pretty much for me. I just want it to be a good display. Not for Ka, he seems to be ok with paper towl and a dog dish hiding in a fruit snack box. But he does win in this by getting more space and a better heat gradient.

There's a water dish in almost any pet store that looks like tan rock, but it's around $15. To me it's easier to just buy the thing than trying to build one or make something look like it. It's big enough for my burm to drink from and I now have it in a cage with 2 balls. I know sometimes money can be tight, especially when raising teenagers, but $15 ain't much. Hassle free and out the door.

P.S. They also have some weight to them and the base is slightly larger. I really like mine.

I think you are talking about the same one I saw... do they have the little "emergency excape steps"? I put a plus sign after the $15 but it didn't show up. I haven't seen any other realistic looking ones in the pet stores though.

Yep, but only in one small spot. They are the best I've used so far and the burm doesn't tip it over.

I would also stick with the ones from the stores. If you get a piece of real rock, then you're going to have to seal it with an epoxy..or a glaze coat type finsh..thats an added $10...plus rock is expensive. the reason it needs to be sealed is because it's a fairly porous material.

I guess I am stuck with the ones from petstores, I was just hopeing someone had a better brand for me, the exo-terra ones just look fake to me. I know I have seen some really nice looking ones with a sort of marbled sandstone look to them, but now I can't find them anywhere. I wasn't planning on getting real rock and making a bowl, but I did consider making one out of the same things I will be making the fake rock walls out of, but in the cost of epoxy, I just don't see it being worth it. Thanks for the imput, and if anyone thinks of a better bowl, let me know!
