Is this a Texas Rat snake?

cowtownherper Oct 04, 2004 05:31 PM

I caught this little one this morning. I guess the rain pushed it indoors. It was in the choir room of the school where I work. I took a couple of pics and plan on releasing it tomorrow. I've caught tx rats before, but this one is a lot prettier than the others. I'm thinking its because its so young. Any responses would be appreciated.

I have noticed a sub-adult Texas rat I caught recently had a red tongue, and this snake I am posting (most likely a emoryi) has a grayish tongue. I'm not sure if that is variable though. Also, does it have stripes under the tail? I have been told the one I have is an emoryi, but am still not 100% sure. Your's does look more like a Texas rat than mine, so I think you may be correct.

Red tongue, no stripe. I thought it was a tx rat. It is just a lot more colerful than the ones I have caught before. Thanks for the reply, Jim
