Another hatchling

the4thmonkey Oct 04, 2004 06:10 PM

Today Sam (the mighty lizard hunter) and I went out to an area where we have captured several collareds in the past. And the hatchlings are out! Some were about the same size as mine; he turned 5 weeks old today. Others were tiny, the one he caught is probably about 2 weeks old. I think she is a female, but I didn't terrorize her any more by making sure. Now my one captive born babe won't have to live all alone. I'll let her settle in for a bit and then post photos. Hehehehe, I have to quit now, or I will have to buy a bigger house. (Or maybe, as Vonnie suggested to Eve, I should just turn the house over to them and live in the RV?)

Yes, I am lucky; he is a great guy. But he had to build the guys a new home because this is ALL his fault! LOL I never dreamed I would enjoy having a pet like this until he caught Otis for me. He also caught both my girls and is responsible for the hatchling too, since one of the girls was pregnant! Then several friends had to have some, so 3 other pairs were captured over the summer. I would tell mine "hey, good thing I love you, because this one is prettier." It is fun to go and visit them all; we have a several areas to look for them around here and they are diverse and beautiful.
I am beginning to wonder about the new babe's age. I had already noticed that her navel was closed/healed more than the male's was at that size and had wondered about that. Today she is going thru a shed, the male didn't do that until he was a month old. Her tummy is nice and round, but I wonder if she has just not grown as fast. Maybe she will now that she has lots of crickets to eat. There were a lot of grasshoppers where we caught her, but I thought they were all pretty big. (The male keeps telling me his name is Hermes but I just can't believe that...)

We have tried to snap a shot once a week to show how fast he is growing. His online baby book is now grown to 2 pages long, I have probably added a couple to it since you last looked. He got some real nice colors along with his first shed. He is getting some yellow on his head like his mom and Otis have. Not like your yellowheads, he is probably a bailyi or a blend. I hope he gets the yellow eyelids and scales on his mouth. Otis always cracks me up, he looks like he has on yellow eyeshadow and lipstick. Anyway, the baby pics are here: http://vrk.photosite.com/Hatchling/

i know i have seen it before but that picture with the tail kills me. what in god's name was he thinking? he has gotten big. anyway you said something earlier about your second lizard not being as big, i think i read once that boys grow really fast the first couple years and then stop, but girls grow slowly and continue to do so their whole lives. perhaps that could explain the difference in size even though they may be the same age. perhaps one of the experts could shine some light on the subject for us

I thought the hatchlings grew at the same rate because they were so hard to sex, but what do I know? LOL I have been winging it and have been very lucky!

well if you had something to compare it to, you might be able to guess. it by no means is an exact science, but i think if two lizards were born on the same day and one gets bigger faster, then it may be a boy. but then again you could always just have a big boned girl. i know with my lizards that walter and kaiser are both younger than ivan, yet they are both longer than her. oh i don't know maybe someone else will comment on it

She has not told me her name yet. But it should be something like "Houdini" or "flash". The babies live in a Neodesha cage with a sliding glass door; she has escaped about every time one of us has opened it. So far she has been recaptured without incident. I am actually considering placing the cage in a bathroom, less places for her to run to when the door is opened. (Have you checked out these cages? I seriously think they were made from the vegetable drawer of a refrigerator.)

Hermes' momma gave me bad scare today. We left to run errands while the lizards were in their outdoor cages. It was almost 4 when we got back, and I didn't see anybody at first glance, but figured they had already gone under their rock. I lifted the rock to bring them indoors and Saige was missing. A small hole in their Apogee nylon screen cage was found. I can't belive she chewed or clawed through but can offer no other explanation. Sam wonders is it was a bird, but I think if a bird bad enough to do that came around they would all be under the rock and the bird would lose interest in them. I already had tears in my eyes as I loked around the yard, knowing in my heart she was gone. And what did I see, but Saige sunning herself on the woodpile. She didn't even try to run when I walked over and picked her up. I'm sure thankful to still have her. I guess they won't be going outside for a while! Now I will be totally paranoid about that cage even after I repair it.

I make all my own emoticons! I have had to patch plastic sreening on my ghetto lizard cage. I think the crickets get it started, then once they are big enough, the Collareds put their big faces in there and push. (Sounds like an old movie about Alkatroz.) But don't let 'em fool you! My old Collared Critter (his name) Got out of a wire mesh cage. The only way he could have gotten out is burrowing i guess. (
