questions about milksnakes..............

nei Oct 04, 2004 07:06 PM

I don't know that much about snakes, but milksnakes seem to be pretty small at least the ones I've seen, so how big DO milksnakes get?
Also, about how big of an enclosure do/will they need when fully grown?
Can multiple milksnakes be housed in the same tank/enclosure?
thanks for any help!!!

Do your homework. The ones you've seen were probably babies or yearlings. They range from 3-6 foot depending on the species.
I hope there will be a breeder to ans more correctly.

Honestly if your looking for a first snake you can't go wrong with the corns. They average 4 foot. I house mine in 20 gallon long tanks. My first snake was a corn then I got a milk and boy you can tell a difference. Milks are much more high strung with handling and more secretive. My tangerine honduran hides 24/7. But he is a neat snake. It's taken him over a year though to be more mellow with handling.

As far as housing more then one snake...it's not recommended at all with any snake. Some snakes will eat other snakes. Also the stress of being housed with another snake will take it's toll.

Just my thoughts...

My first snake was a sinaloan milksnake. He's extremely docile (I got him as a yearling, so I have no idea what he was like as a hatchling), easy to care for, eats like a pig, very pretty, and is overall a joy to keep. Sinaloan males reach about 5 ft I'm told and do make excellent beginner snakes (but don't rule out cornsnakes, they are awesome too!). I keep mine in a 22x24 in. enclosure.

I recommend getting this book: "Kingsnakes and Milksnakes; Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Breeding, Behavior, and Training" (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals). I bought it when I was researching sinaloans and it covers everything you need to know about milksnakes in general. You can find it on Amazon.com.
