what kind of snake would...

nei Oct 04, 2004 10:45 PM

Is there a kind of snake that can be ok in a 29 gallon tank for a while (or full grown)? Or a 40 gallon?
Does care (or anything else) matter between the males and females? Is one easier than the other?
Thanks for any help!!!!

when you ask would it be fine, you are very vague. there are a bunch of snakes that are kept in extremly small containers... usually done by breeders, and they are very healthy. but would they prefer that... probably not. A colubrid (rat snake or corn snake) is reccomended to have an enclosure that is 2/3rds long as they are, 1/2 deep and 1/3 high. thats so they can stretch out and such. Corns usually do wel in a 29 gallon, what is the floor size of a 40? anyone?

Well I geuss I mean, if there is a kind of snake that will be happy and be able to move around well in a 29 gallon tank, to live in.
(also, its the 40 breeder that I have which tigergenesis said was ~36" x 18" x 16"~ I think)

I will look into corn snakes, do they do ok in a 29 gallon, or is that too small? is the 40 breeder big enough for them?

Are there any others anyone would suggest? I like to have a couple (5 maybe) in mind, so that I can research those and then pick between them. Thanks!!

Care between males and females are generally the same (except maybe when it comes to breeding issues).

A corn would work, and I'd definitely recommend if it's your first snake. They're docile, good eaters and come in a variety of colors, etc.

Just keep in mind there can be size differences between male and female in adults. So a male so-and-so might be better than a female of the same when considering space.

Also, I might go to a reptile expo in a few weeks, so I want to know what I should be looking at. Any suggestions? Any breeders you would reccommend? or not recommend?

Either size would be fine for a cornsnake. So do you have 2 tanks and are planning on getting 2 snakes? I'd also suggest you look into Mexican Black Kingsnakes, California Kingsnakes and Rosy Boas.

Can't wait to hear what you get.

Thank you!! I'll look into those also!

Well, I'm only planning on one right now........ I have an empty 29 gallon tank, so I was thinking of getting a snake, but by the time I decide on and get a snake, I was thinking I may have my 40 gallon available (might move my turtles up),
I'd rather get one that does well in a 29 gallon, buut if I rreeaalllly like one that needs a 40 gallon, I'll probably switch my turtles sooner.
