Just wondering what kind of feeding regimens ya'll have your Juvi Iguanas? What's their favorites?
Dark leafy greens (collard, mustard, dandelion, chicory) should make up the base of any age iguanas diet...then throw in other veggies like squash, green beans, peppers etc with minimal fruit...have fun...Lyn
I feed mine romane lettuce, collard, and mustard greens daily. And I mix in things like apples, strawberry, blue berrys, carrots or green beens. I switch what i put in, fruits like apples i use as treats. He loves apples. But don't give to many fruits, that only needs to be about 10% of his diet. Find which food he likes and also mix in calcium supplements and maybe juvi growth/vitamen pellets.
"Juvie pellets" are not suggested because most of commercial foods have far too much animal protein in them which with long term use, causes kidney failure in adult iguanas...fresh is best...lettuce (even Romaine) should only be used very occasionally because it has no nutrients in it...stick to the dark leafy greens...good luck...Lyn
I don't put the romaine alone, i mix in dark greens, Fruits (afternoon snack) and vegitables in all togther along with the calcium that he needs. I try to make sure he gets all the nutrition he needs. I also only sprinkle the dry food on top, not much. The dry food i have is the growth formula with vit. for young iguanas, once he gets over 12" from nose to base of tail i'll stop giving him that. I'm not sure about all this stuff about the dry food but my vet told me that it was ok and good for me to sprinkle that on top. If anyone knows something that i need to change and doing wrong about the dry food please let me know..
You need to very carfully read the ingredients list on your dry food. If ther is anything that could have come from another animal, mammal or sea creature, you SHOULD NOT be feeding it. Also, like it was said before, the dry food can dehydrate the iggy. You should soak it in water first. If you REALLY trust your vet use it, but I do not see why you should be using it if you could just be using a normal reptile vitamin suplement or crushing a human grade supplement. Romaine lettuce, or anything with lettuce in the name, is just water and just takes away space in your iggs stomach that could be filled with food that has vitamins and calcium that he needs. If you are feeding the right foods you should not need supplements or that dry food. Hope this helps, good luck with the little guy.

The dry food is REP-CAl or as some call them fruity pebbles for igs. lol.
I got this off the REP-CAL web site...
Rep-Cal Juvenile Iguana Food is formulated to ensure proper growth and health by providing complete and balanced nutrition. It is veterinarian recommended food containing natural plant and fruit ingredients iguanas love and provides the 100% complete daily nutrition they need. Rep-Cal Juvenile Iguana Food has been tested successfully for juvenile iguanas (less than 12" long from nose to base of tail) by reptile veterinarians. It is fortified with optimal levels of vitamins and minerals like calcium and vitamin D3 so no other food or supplements are required.
he also gets all the greens he needs to...and not alot of romaine...he just likes romaine so i add alittle in.
Thank you for your help!
Ok, well, not to sound like a complete moron, but if you buy that info from the web site, the n why are you feeding greens? You need to understand that unlike the human food market there is no FDA for animals that says that they HAVE to tell you everything about the food item. I know the rep-cal pellets and I know people who use them, but you STILL need to soak them. They are a DRY pellet and they are going to take moisture away from the iguana in his stomach rather then the igg absorbing the water for himself. Rep-Cal is a good food, on occasion, but it is not a supplement and it really is not going to do anytihng for your igg that the other greens can't do. If he really is getting all the reccomended greens like you say, WHY are you feeding the pellets? I am not trying to sound like a complete jerk, but think of the logic in that for a second.

It took awhile but my ig eats them now.
We use a variation of the "MK" diet. We fed Iggi the exact same diet when she was young, we just tore up the turnip greens into peices about the size of her head. The smaller the iguana, the smaller the piece size. It worked out OK. Here she is today at 4 years old, sitting on my wife's shoulder, as my wife prepares her food.
