Gecko passed on can I use the same cage

gurnham4 Oct 05, 2004 12:29 AM

Hey guys
recently (last wendesday) my gecko passed on (baby i got from a petstore that I didn't know was sick. But I think he/she passed on from parasites. I was talking to someone from the forum and he had strong feelings that I should no longer use the tank. I was always under the impression a good bleach soak or two for the tank will kill all of the bateria.

The user also suggested to boil the wood logs, boil dishes (put them in the dishwasher), rewash the carpet, and clean the decorations with a bleach/water solution. Does everyone throw out their cages, I can understand there can be a risk in reusing a cage but if it's bleached, it should be ok right? What does everyone else do?

No there's no worry if you bleach the crap out of everything that interacted with your leo.

sorry for your loss by the way, i remember your earlier posts.
Try to go to a reputable breeder this time.

Don't support petstores by "saving" dying animals, it means that they can actually sell their animals and still treat them like crap, not directed at only you, but anyone else reading this post

I honesty didn't know that the gecko was sick when i got it. i atleast got my full refund back. I did call the ASPCA and last time I checked the ASPCA made them take the geckos to the vet. When i went to the store the other day, there was a whole new batch of geckos in the cage. I wonder what happened to them all... I hope the ASPCA took care of it.

I will be going to an expo at the end of the month to get a gecko from a reptutable breeder... Do alot of the same breeders come to all the shows? are their certain breeders i should look for? can people start throwing out names of breeders they delt with (and provided a healthy gecko and the people were nice). maybe i can look out for them during the show and give breeders who diserve it business.

I'm going to buy a bottle of bleach next time i go to the grocery store and clean out the cage.

Thanks for sending your regards, I appreciate it. I really liked my little guy, still bummed it's gone.

Where are you from and what expo are going to? Depends on what expo you are going to as to which breeders will be there.

Do you know what your gecko died from? I have heard crypto can still contaminate a gecko after using bleach. Snarks, do you remember Christina? There was another chemical she said to use, I can't remember what it was.

no idea what it died from, it was skinny and had diarreha

i read this on another message board
"I am very sorry for your loss. Just a word of caution, if the gecko did have crypto, bleach will not kill the oocysts. The only common household product that will kill crypto oocysts is ammonia. If you used a glass aquarium, spray down all surfaces with ammonia and let it sitfor a day or two spraying a few more times during that time. Obviously rinse and air very well before using again. Personally, I would throw any cage decorations away. The oocysts are known to be infective for months outside of a reptile host so I would definitely err on the sideof caution.

Chris"

so how does bleaching the tank first and then using amonmonia sound?

lisa_cristin Oct 05, 2004 04:36 PM

It sounds good, but be careful. I know nothing about chemistry but they are pretty strong chemicals, I don't know if they should be mixed. Look it up on the internet just to make sure.

nah it won't be mixed. I'll do one cleaning of bleach where it sits for a day/two and one cleaning of amonia where it sits for a day/two

I reused my leo tank after my first died (of crypto we think) and I just soaked the tank and everything else that was in it in ammonia for 2 hours or so. And my new leo isn't sick so it must have worked.

Snarks Oct 05, 2004 08:17 PM

You'll be fine, just do use the worst most environmentally UNfriendly chemicals there are out there
Then rinse like you've never rinsed before and leave it for a week in a well ventilated area. You're not getting this gecko really soon are you? If you are just house it in a temporary home. Also about breeders at a show, it doesn't matter really who you get it from, the more reputable ones will and can be just more expensive for quality blood lines.

However at the show you do get to talk to the people who produced and gave the first month or so jumpstart to your leo, assuming you're getting a baby.

Anyhue good luck

I'm getting the gecko on the 24th. I'm gonnna soak the cage in the chemical solutions and leave it outside (the ammonia will make my cats want to pee wherever it smells like ammonia) it's going to be grueling but hell bleach and ammonia are pretty powerful stuff, that should take care of everything

tim5580 Oct 06, 2004 03:42 PM

>>hell bleach and ammonia are pretty powerful stuff, that should take care of everything

If you mix bleach and ammonia, they react to each other and give off a gas, which can knock you out, and possibly suffocate you if you pass out in room with gas. Even if you don't lose conciousness, the fumes are still harmful.

I know this, i appreciate the concern. When i said i was going to clean it with bleach and then ammonia i didn't mean that i was going to mix the two. I'm a film major, trust me I know alot about chemicals

tim5580 Oct 06, 2004 06:08 PM

Yeah, some people know it, a lot don't though. I wasn't directing it personally at you, just thought I'd get the word out since noone else mentioned it. I know people that have mixed them and got knocked out.
