I currently use coconut fibers that come in a brick that you can get at the big corporate pet shops. I also like just plain potting soil with no fertilizers or perlite. I don't use any bark or mulch products, for fear of indegestion. I have seen story after story of death by bark. The bonus of potting soil is that it will break down organic waiste reducing the smell, cuz' let me tell ya', Monitor crap stinks! Hope that helps... I love the Black Throats!

Outdoor field dirt, maybe add a very small percentage of sand (less than 10%). Lots of dirt, deep dirt as deep as you can. BTs get big very fast and love to dig and burrow, that other stuff sugested is junk for burrows and usefulness. I use thes stuff from creek and river banks with my albigs.

I use a mixture of 50% potting soil, 25% sand (now retrieved from the shores of a nearby lake) and 25% vermiculite. I keep it just damp enough tp allow my Asian Water to burrow. I don't mist it either..I just dump a half gallon of water right in there and let the dirt soak it up!
