How do I get my iguana and dog to get along?

seymorspal Oct 05, 2004 09:40 AM

I have a young iguana and a 3 year old fiest, my dog is small and calm his just is curios about seymor. I want to figure out how i can get them used to each other and introduce them. My iguana panics when my dog comes near his cage. I try to keep them apart but sometimes my dog likes to wonder in my room and see whats going on so....how can i help this situation?

This is a question I get so often at shows. I would work more with training the dog to ignore the iguana. My dogs basically ignore my reptiles and that has taken alot of work. Iguanas see dogs as predators and it is much easier to train a domesticated animal rahter than a wild one.

Elevating the cage so the lizard is six feet up is the only way I can imagine that your ig can get a feeling of safety around your dog. It's the position from which parrots give themselves authority to bite their owners' ears. From that security-inducing position you can conduct anti-sensitizing introductory lessons on the floor, because they will be exceptions to the norm. No doubt your dog is much more curious about the ig than your iguana is about the dog. You might have to conduct anti-sensitizing sessions, one minute at a time, from a room away if your ig had picked up real strong fear.

Or, you can get a shock collar for the dog and press the button whenever he looks at the ig (ick). It would work though, I might do it in certain situations.
