Parazap, P.Vitticeps, Wise to use?

Slizarus Oct 05, 2004 11:35 AM

I'm wondering if it's wise to use without consulting a vet,
I have reason to believe the stress of an exhibit last weekend allowed my beardeds to succumb to Coccidia, I understand a small amount is normal, but now the stools have been runny and I'm worried about them.
I'm dead broke after settling a Desert Tortoise and even a $20 fecal exam is too much when the $20 should be going to herp food.
When I get enough I'll pick up some parazap and having read instructions I'm sure I can administer it correctly.. seemingly chance of overdose is low, is this true?
Should I wait and see the vet? Or take my chances and try to remove the parasites before my beardeds actually start showing symptoms?
(They're busy as normal, seemingly healthy it's just the stools that are worrying me)

You should try to see a vet because with coccidia, time is of the essence. Coccidia multiplies at an extremely fast rate, so if your beardie is already showing symptoms, you should act ASAP. It's very hard to save an animal with coccidia once it gains the upper hand.

Rather than paying the $25 to buy Parazap, spend that money towards a fecal. You should be able to find a vet that can do one for $5-$10. Parazap doesn't have any direct effect on coccidia. The acting ingredients only lower coccidia by eliminating any worms that might be compromising the animal's immune system. I also recommend doing a fecal just to confirm that coccidia is the culprit here. The medication that's normally used to treat coccidia is Albon, but this is a very potent medication that can cause kidney damage so it's not worth shotgunning with.

For the time-being, make sure you keep your beardie's enclosure super clean. Take out the poop and change the substrate every day. When I had to deal with coccidia, I was cleaning the tanks everyday. Not every 2-3 days but EVERY day. In some cases, fastidious cleaning can be more helpful than medication.

This is going to be a stressful few days, I'll look around.. well it seems I'll be discarding the substrate a few weeks early.. the sand needed to be changed anyways.
Well, I'll get them to a vet soon, last I need is to have more problems and I understand it could be even more costly later on..
How much does the medicine cost to eliminate the worms?

It depends on the vet and how much they give you. Most vets seem to like giving you a small bottle of the medication so they can charge you for two ounces instead of the 1 or 2 mL you need. My current vet measures out what I need in syringes and gives them to me for free.

Fenbendazole (aka Panacur or SafeGuard) is used to treat nematodes like hookworms and pinworms. Your vet might also prescribe Pyrantel Pamoate (aka Strongid T or Nemex) as an alternative to treat worms. There are other choices, but these are your two safest ones.

Albon is used to treat coccidia.

Metronidazole (aka Flagyl) is used for other protozoa like flagellates and giardia plus some bacteria. This is the expensive one. Don't let your vet add the fancy flavoring they use for spoiled puppies and kittens, because it might cost you an extra $15.

K, I'll do my best to get a fecal done soon, I hope it was unnecessary.. I'd be worried if they turned out to have parasites
