Best temperature to breed rats in????

reptilesintampa Oct 05, 2004 01:09 PM

I'm not getting any production from my rats in my reptile room, air temp is around 88, and tubs seem to have high humidity levels as well, so I've drilled additional holes, but I'm wondering if I should move the rats somewhere else... Thanks

Any gestation info would be great as well. what should I expect from 5 males and 20 females per month.. Thanks

Dropping them to comfortable room temps will help a lot. All the humidity is likely to cause upper respiratorys.
Gestation is the same as mice- 21days. 20 girls at a litter every other to third month(if they are raising the pups) , 12-16 or so per litter........

Haven't we warned you about tampering with the structure of a chaotic system?

68 - 78 degrees is the temps. you want to keep them at. What tepersature you use in this range depends upon your particular strain. I have Long evans and S.D. rats I keep them at 78. I keep them at the high end because I also maintain a heat loving strain of mice that I imported from australia in the same room. Reproduction for my rats couldn't be better at this temp. It is also very important not to have any temprature fluctuation. This can severly affect reproduction. My rodent room stays at a constant 78 degrees. Many labs claim that they have a higher rate of reproduction at the low end, at 68. I have not experimented with temperatures this low.
Hope this helps Gordon
