New Beardie Parent has Questions

longday29 Oct 05, 2004 04:10 PM

Some questions I have about my 5 day’s new Bearded Dragon “Buddha” that have not been answered in my net research:

First off, he’s only about 6” from head to tail; how old is he?

He appears to love attention, always locking his eyes on whoever is in the room, but whenever I put my hand in his tank for feedings, or try to pick him up, he becomes quite timid. Any ideas/suggestions on how to develop his social skills? Should I perhaps wait a few weeks for him to put on some girth before handling?

How fast should I expect him to grow? At what age do they stop growing?

How easy is it to introduce him to another beardie later on? Do they prefer to be housed with other beardies?

I appreciate everyone’s input. This forum is an awesome resource… I’ll get some pictures of buddah on here soon. I need to show off his rattle snake type coat.

Peace,

BS

He’s about 1-3 months old

This is the temperament of a young dragon, they are intently curious about everything but sometimes become skiddish from human interaction, never pick him up from the top or back, never make very fast movements, with about 15-30 minutes of handling a day he will pretty soon become calm

They stop growing in about 11 months, u should expect him to grow at least an inch or so a month, don’t worry if he doesn’t grow for some time, beardies tend to have growth spurts where one day hell be one size and in a week could be nearly twice that size

I could not say the “prefer” to be housed together but 1 male and 1 female or 2 females can be housed together provided u have a large enough tank, multi basking and hide spots and, maybe even different feed spots. Be careful if you house 1 male and 1 female because there’s a large possibility they could mate.
