Bypass cage track (don't shoot me)

purduecg Oct 05, 2004 04:45 PM

OK, its official, I cannot get the track for the bypass glass doors anywhere locally. Even the local glass shop. All they had was the enormous industrial version, which was expensive, and thick!

Does anyone have an online supplier for the track for 1/4in glass?

I am sorry if we have discussed this already. I looked back because I thought we might have, but couldn't find anything, and also searched the forums.

Thank you for the help.

Hi Elizabeth,

Rockler.com has them in plastic as well as wood.

Hope that helps

Cheers

Has anyone used the Rockler track to know how to determine the height the glass should be cut to fit into the tracks? It would be very helpful if I could have the glass people get started on that while I am waiting for the track to get here.

I use the wooden track of theirs but IMO i think you should wait until it arrives, attach it to your enclosure and then measure. That way you can be exact in your measurements. What i did was cut a 1/4 inch piece of plexiglass until it fit securely yet was easily removed and had my glass cut accordingly.

Elizabeth,

James is right if the track you order does not come with specific measurements. However, I'm pretty sure Rockler's plastic track does come with these measurments. I've used the track but just don't remember what it is.

I'll call a friend of mine and ask. Or maybe you can call Rockler and ask?

James,

When do we get to see your pictures? Also, what did the monitor forum say about sliding doors, tempered glass, and large monitors, etc.?

I have put an email into their customer service center posing this question, so hopefully they will have an answer. I was surprised they did not have a spec sheet with this particular product, since they did with most of the others. I did not find any wood tracks on their site at all, but I think the plastic will work fine.

Hi Chris,

I appologize, i have yet to develop the film. Ive been pretty busy the last couple of weeks between working overtime and monitors. I'll make sure i get those up.

As far as the sliding glass, some didnt deem it a good idea while others use tempered without issues.SO i decided to try it. I just adjusted my cage design so that the glass is a foot above the substrate. That way it'll be less likely that my salvator will/can tail whip the glass.

And by the way im not sure about Rocklers platic track but the wood ones didnt come with any measurements.

Cheers

If these are the standard tracks I think you measure the opening and subtract 3/8" for the correct measurement of the glass. But it is by far best to wait and set the tracks...then get a good measurement. I use cardboard when I want a really accurate measurement.

It had not occurred to me to use cardboard, or something similar, to test out the height!

Rockler says the glass should be cut 7/16th of an inch less than the opening height. Just thought I would share that.

I am guessing I will take the risk and have the glass cut. I am starting to run into a serious time issue, since the new Uro that is taking over the current cage is arriving on Wednesday...

That's the measurement I remember from the tan Knap and Vogt product I have used. I thought the Rockler product was the same but did not want to say so and end up wrong.

Make sure to have the edges prepped for plastic glass track and have each piece at least two inches longer than half the opening of your cage.

Thanks Chris,

I was debating how much overlap to include on the glass doors!

Is there something special that needs to be done, other than just have the edges smoothed?

I've got to admit that I'm not 100% clear on this. I believe the three things that can be done to prep a glass edge for plastic track is to bevel, sand, or polish the edges. Beveling is mutualy exclusive from the other two. Polishing is just an extreme version of sanding, I believe.

Might be best to talk to you local glass dealer.

Chris was on the money , the rockler track is PVC so when you add the weight of 1/4" glass to those tracks you need to specify to you glass man to do a "Pencil polised edge" on all sides of the glass.A pencil edge is a "rounded" edge on the sides and on the corners , if this isnt done the glass will eat away at the PVC track. ( thats one reason i dont reccomend PVC track for glass doors ) but with the edges properly dressed it wont wear out the tracks (as bad ) alos you might want to hit the bottom of the glass w/ some parafin wax that will let it slide easier on the tracks .
