Help with some sticky shed

azmiris Oct 05, 2004 06:13 PM

Hi there, my Hogg is having a tricky shed. I've tried raising the humidity, soaking, even a commercial shed spray, pieces are still sticking all over! Does anyone know some sure-fire ways to get shed pieces off without resorting to scrubbing the poor snake with a toothbrush? Thanks

Yup SOAK`em some more !!(at least 30 min) and then "Let them" at their own pace, crawl thru a damp towel.Or as I have done once or twice for problem shedders, coat them with cooking oil and let`em sit over night then try the soak and towel method and its worked every time.Make sure to get the tail tip cleaned ASAP as it will cause some serious issues if retained.Next blue cycle crank up the humidity to 70`ish then soak the snake after the eyes clear 1-2 days prior to the actual shedding. Some snakes get it right and some never do no matter what you do in advance.

Best Of Luck

I am having same problem. I have never had to soak any of my snakes before. How do you get a snake that is not to keen to go into the water to soak? Especially for 30 minutes?

Thanks,
Tracy

Here is a way a top breeder taught me that works excellent. Take a vented, plastic container that is big enough for the snake to move around a bit in. Mix aspen shavings with luke warm water so it is "soupy"-not real watery but very soaked. Also not deep enough for the snake to drown. Place the snake in overnight and all stuck shed will be removed. The combination of the humidity and the snake moving through the wet aspen will remove everything including eye caps. Do make sure the container is escape proof or place it inside the snakes cage. I have used this method many times with great success. Hope this helps-Bill

I dont understand the logic ?Its possible that breeder has better things to do then give specific care to an individual when needed. So just plop the snake in a bucket and deal with it in the morning
Soaking a snake over 30 min will not benift the cause IMO,how can a boa benifit from soaking 6,8-10 hrs in 70`ish degree water ?? Prolonged exposure to 100% Saturated humidity for 6-8 hrs is asking for trouble if you were to ask a majority.
