HELP PLEASE! FEMALE OR MALE?!

GreenAnoleManiac Oct 05, 2004 07:18 PM

Ok, yeah, I've read over hundred's of things about how to determnine the sex of your anole, and I have yet to have them completely and absolutely decide, what they are.
If you wondering, both of them are fairly large but one is a bit smaller with a white line down its back, today the bigger was doing "push-ups" and stretching its dewlap, any help that you guys could give me would be absolutely appreciated.

I assume you have Green Anoles (A. carolinensis). There are two sure ways to tell. Mature males will have a hemipenile bulge on either side where the tail joins the body. They will also have two enlarged post-anal scales that can be seen with slight magnification. Other methods (i.e., dewlap, white stripe, etc.) are unreliable since females may have small dewlaps and immature males (and mature males) may have a white stripe.

If the larger one is head bobbing with his dewlap out he is probably a male though. But the smaller one could be either.

yea, i have a female that's got a pretty dewlap, its a bright orange color, but much smaller than the male's, i rarely see her use it. but she always bobs heads with the male at least, although i've seen the male chase other males just like he chases the female.
