Tree Frog Question?

JoshNLisa Oct 05, 2004 09:00 PM

Hello to all -

I have searched many pages on the internet for info and read several books, but i've found that there is not a lot of information out there...and i have a bunch of questions, but i will start off with just this one for now:

First off i have three green tree frogs, and three western toads...all housed together (for now) (in a big tank)which live very peacefully together. However, the toads and particulary the big male tree frog can pig out on some crickets! They are all pretty aggressive when they are fed and sometimes the baby and middle green tree frog don't get a chance to eat as much, or even get any crickets. We've tried flooding the tank with more crickets (which can get pretty expensive), but it seems like the same pig-olas get them. So...my question is, is it okay to take the frogs out and feed them in a separate tank where there isn't so much competition for the food, or am i messing with nature, etc? We've had all frogs for many months now...all are healthy and i really enjoy having them. Any help anyone would give me would be awesome!

Thanks,
Lisa

Having frogs that vary in size can be a problem because the larger frogs can accidently eat the smaller ones, thinking that it is a cricket. I would seriously consider seperating the smaller frogs from the larger. This will help them to get the food and nutrition that is needed and not be potential meals themselves.

I would just seperate the frogs to not risk anything. The toads and frogs might need different tank environments. Also like xcrashx(i think) said small frogs can get eaten.

Cute! You have a small little zoo like us:

1 Black Lab (Sunshine)
2 red ear slider turtles (Cecilia & Merve) (Just got them feeding out of my hand too!
2 Baby Whites Dumpys (Big D and Mango)
3 Western Toads (Jabba, Padmire & Kingston (in order of size)
3 Green Tree Frogs (Croaker, Granola, and skipjack) (in order of size).

I do not know all the sexes though...just on two of the Green tree frogs because they are noise makers! It's become tank mania in our house! lol! And we plan to get another tank for the green tree frogs, a big vertical tank, i've read the green tree frogs like that better. Still recovering financially from all the tanks, etc...but it's in the plans. The pet store did advise us that the western toads do well with the green tree frogs…and they really seem to…I’ve caught them cuddling, if that’s what you would call it. One side is more of the toad side with places to hide in and sleep on the ground, etc.

Thanks for replying to my message!
Guess i was misleading in my verbage, the green tree frogs and toads are all the same size, but i think of the one green tree frog (Croaker) as bigger cause he is certainly the dominant male in the tank! We do plan on getting a separate tank for the green guy's...

But for now...i'm noticing that Croaker will sweep through the tank pretty quickly, as well as the toads and scoop up the majority of the crickets, before the other two tree frogs (granola and skipjack)even un stick themselves from the glass. Once the two realize it's feeding time, they wait around but the crickets are almost all eatten up. And Granola is getting skinnier while Croaker has a pot belly! So, question is, do you think i should fed those two separately so that they get the food they need???

Thanks! Lisa

U cud hand feed. But dont force them to eat or take them out unless you have to. Frogs get stressed easily.
