Here's one of my UGLY supers,.... open with extreme caution

BrianSmith May 15, 2003 12:46 AM

J/K,... This is Dottie after a fresh shed. She just keeps getting yellower on top and whiter on her sides. I can't wait to breed her. Enjoy.

That's some pretty nice yellow! Most of the subadult to adult Supers I have seen take on much more of a golden color - But I gotta say... Yellow is where it's at!

I just finished paying for my baby male Super - should have him here some time next week.

If that is your ugly supers. I want to see one of your beautiful supers. She is more yellow than a lemon. Awsome super.

BrianSmith May 15, 2003 03:03 PM

Actually I was kidding,. she's my best looking female in my opinion. One guy in the old forum (Lance) liked another female that tends to be a little more of a darker bronze/yellow with orange wedges on her sides. Me personally,.. this is the pony to bet on for future beauties. My male is just as good looking, if not better. As he's a little smaller he hasn't shown as much change yet as the females have. But when they were all the same size he blew all the females away. I will get some pictures up of him soon.

Ya she is ugly......send her to me.

masterming May 16, 2003 03:37 PM

Wow Brian, she is beautiful. I love to be on your waiting list for her. Do you have a pic of the male you might breed her to?

BrianSmith May 16, 2003 04:24 PM

... when he was a little smaller. This isn't a very good shot of him but one I took to showcase his orange side dots. He's an amazing specimen though and I will post some up to date photos of him soon. But I haven't made up my mind yet if I am going to use him,.. or my tiger het albino. The thought of producing more tiger het albinos is always very appealing to me, and half the clutch would also be supers,.... so I don't know yet. Part of me wants to pursue other possible super projects that would involve this male super pictured here. When I selected him, the female in question, and a third similar female at Bob's place I chose these particular three for special traits. All three of these have no nose dots, and they all are virtually patternless on their latter half's except for a single narrow dorsal stripe. All three have cemetrical dots on their sides instead of stripes. And all three were a high yellow even as hatchlings. I want to selectively breed them and their offspring for a few generations and try to better isolate and increase that patternlessness, and to simultaneously isolate and focus on the side dots and certain color traits in other select groups of offspring. Quite honestly I'm surprised Bob even let me have these. It make's me wonder at what his personal picks must look like. We'll know in a couple of years when the offspring of those begin to emerge. I will next post a picture of the patternless sections I was talking about. Tell me what you think of it.

Here's a decent shot of Dotties' latter half. The patternless section on the male I mentioned above goes up the furthest on his body. Dotties' is second best. And while I realize that many many supers have a certain amount of patternlessness on their posterier, I have never seen it go so high or be so flawless before. Dotties' is yellow on top and white on the sides and bottom and this continues to lighten with each shed. I need to get a better camera. I will soon. The camera I have now is horible for anything remotely close-up. I am able to take slightly better pictures right now because I made a light stand I can set up to really illuminate the snakes. This helps with the colors (except on the albinos) but not on definition. If I use the flash on the supers the bright yellows and whites flashback in the end picture. I will get a new camera soon. Watch out Steve (Gooch), I am going to be a picture taking fool, lol.

I see what you mean. I gotta give it up to you. You've got the nicest Supers I"ve seen so far. They are truly extraordinary.

masterming May 17, 2003 02:33 AM

Brian, I really commend your dedication to the Reticulated Python. And I wish you the best of luck with your future projects. They sound great and I am definately looking foward to see what you come out with. Man you're so lucky. I wish I lived close enough to go to Bob's and hand pick my Super that I just recently bought. I'm planning on breeding him to my 02 Albino. I'm also planning on trying to hatch out the first tiger Burm X Retic if its even possible. Do you think that'll work out? But if you do plan on hatching out some 66% Supers, I would be very interested if you decide to make them available. Thanks,

Ming.

I don't live close to Bob. I wish I did. But I have to drive over 1400 miles to "go shopping" as I call it. But all the same it is well worth it. Bob's facility and his animals are nothing short of amazing. It's worth it to spend a few hundred to go there just to see the snakes. Even more to actually get some. I urge anyone serious about getting a quality snake to make the trip. Not the least of which he's also a great guy and fun to hang with. And to pick his brain about snakes is like mining for gold nuggets. Unlike a lot of private breeders he is open and very generous with sharing breeding information and trade "secrets" lol.

On the supers, you bet. It may be a couple of years though as it's really hard to predict when they will breed and etc. But time flies and we'll be there before you know it.

I wished i lived close to Bob.I would love to see his facility. I do not know of any big breeders close to North Carolina with retics or burms. Maybe once i am out of college i might get a chance to go visit him.

BrianSmith May 17, 2003 04:01 PM

All the more reason for you to breed and become "The big tic and burm breeder there". It's all demographics man. You'd corner the N.C. big python market.

I would have to do a whole lot better next year than i did this year. No one want 97 duds. Hpefully with your help and the help of others on here, i can get lucky.

BrianSmith May 19, 2003 03:37 PM

That's a lot more "normal" than I think you realize. There probably isn't a breeder out there that didn't have really bad first or second years. Heck, when i got my first clutch of burmese eggs (1982, I believe) the female dropped 47 eggs, 44 of which were huge fertile eggs. Not a lot was known then (generally speaking) and I didn't know any Bob Clarks or other snake breeders. There really weren't very many breeders then period and I certainly didn't know any. So I searched for any knowledge about how to incubate the eggs and got some advice from a guy that "knew what he was talking about" and he told me to completely bury my eggs in wet vermiculite. The only thing that was accurate was the temperature he gave me (90). Well, all the eggs began to rot and die and only three made it to hatching day, but they were so weak and mal-developed that they soon died too. It was a total loss. The next year that same A-hole got a clutch and I went to see them and the eggs were sitting very nicely well above the vermiculite, yet still nestled slightly into shallow depressions. I was livid and when I asked him about this he denied to my face that he never told me to bury my eggs. I was so angry I couldn't find words. But anyways,.. back to the original point,. we all have bad years and clutches. Just in April I got a big preemie litter of Guyanas. Only 7 survived. Though there was only 1 still born, all but 9 died in the first 24 hours. 2 others that went on to strengthen and eat also died suddenly. But then about a week ago I got another litter of 34, 31 of which are doing nicely. So it balances out. It's always good to hedge your bets by running multiple females of what you want to produce.
But yeah, I'll help all I can. Email me any time.
